Authorities Distribute Food
to Thousands of Destitute
Men, Women, Children.
HARDSHIPS ARE ENDURED
50,000 People are Incamped at Presidio. 200,000 In
Golden Gate Park, and 100,000 in City's
Vacant Blocks Supplies Coming in.
SAN FRANCISCO, April 20. -The problem now
eonfronting the city government and federal au
thorities is how to feed the multitude of destitute.
Supplies are coming in by the boat load, but the
6ystem of distribution is not yet complete. At the
Presidio 50,000 people are camped and affairs are
conducted with military precision. "Water is plen
tiful and rations were dealt out all day long. Refu
gees stand patiently in line and not a murmur is
heard. This character is observable all over the
city. The people are brave and patient and the
wonderful order preserved by them has been of
great assistance.
200.000 In Golden Gate Park
In Golden Gate Park are encamped 200,000. They
are being taken care of. A huge supply station is
established there and provisions are being dealt out.
Probably 100,000 more people are camped on vacant
lots and squares scattered about the city and these
are the unfortunates which are hard to reach.
Banks Will Open Up
, The banks have not yet decided what to do. In
all cases the vaults are intact and as soon as quarters
can be provided business will be resumed. Six hun
dred men from the ocean shore railway will arrive
tonight with wagons and implements to. commence
immediate work on the sewer system. Inspectors !
are going .from hoase to house examining the chim
neys and will issue permits to build fires.
Although.every effort of the relief committees was
bent to appease the gnawing hunger of the destitute
thousands, there are tonight many persons either
without sufficient food or entirely without it. The
government officials took charge of every grocery
store still standing and gave out food. Bread lines
were established at Fillmore and Turk streets at
the Golden Gate Park, and the Presidio, and every
person who stood in line was given a whole loaf.
The line at Fillmore and Turk streets was four
blocks long all the afternoon.
People Are Quiet
There were no disorders when the hungry thou
sands were told to form in line and receive bread
and canned goods. All were content to wait their
turn. Silk hatted men of affairs followed good na
turedly behind the Chinese and took their loaf from
the same hand. Soup kitchens were established in
the streets and many hungry persons were fed.

Small Insurance Companies Fail
CHICAGO, April 20. -It was declared last night
by Chicago insurance men that manv of small acci

involved now is placed at more than $80,000,000 in

insurance companies will be called upon to meet is
considered conservative. Added to the losses in San
