FRIDAY, MARCH ij, 9- THE MORNING ASTORIAN, ASTOIUA. OKKCON. vi . - NEW YELLOW 'MUM." rvpaUr Tlatotkjr Eatoa. Another valuable addition to tin Raton family of chryaautheaiuuia lm ioparted from the rather coarse form tf the Eaton and dovelopwl Into a tautiful and reflupd flower. A writer lu Gardening, In whloh this new sjHUt U illtmtrnted, nay it urlRluatod with John A. Macrae of lUiode Islaud Ui th fall of 1JHM. lu a bench of yellow Katona one flower nnwariuK entirely distinct lu color and form was left to fully develop after the others had beou cut. This it did two or throe weeks later. The color is much dtvper than that of the parent and at stages of the KEW SPORT OF TEL LOW EATOS. flower's development equals that of the Appleton. The form Is the Bounaffou type, but the petals are more closely folded. The bloom Is about tbe same color when completely developed. Tht petals are more pointed than those of the BoDiiaffon. deeply cupped, highly arched. beautifully Incurved and ex ceedingly double lu the center. The new Bower's growth Is equal in every respect to the parental except that It eenis shorter joiuted. It shows no tendency to revert, and Its keeping qualities are uuequaled. the original Cower having been kept four weeks. The first flowers of the new plant were cut Nov. 15. 1905, and shown on that date before the chrysanthemum committee In Boston, where It scored 80 points. An attempt will be made to have stock In readiness for the exhibi tions of 1906. TRIMMING TREES. Bw aad Vkn to Hadle VarUaa Pratt Bcarara. Cherry trees after the first few years and when the head Is formed need prac tically no pruning. Simply cut out dead or crossed limbs. Peach trees need much trimming. Cut back at least one-half of the new growth each season and thin out tbe center of head. Apples, pears, plums and quinces re quire moderate pruning each year. Avoid cutting off large limbs, if pos sible. Cover all wounds with thick paint. Broad, low down trees are easier to epray, thin, pick and trim. Cut out those high tops! Compact, low trees suffer less from storms. "Prune in June for fruitfulness, in the spring for wood." This is a wise old saw. But most farmers are too busy with other work In June; conse quently the larger proportion of or ehardists do their pruning in February or March. But there Is great merit In June pruning Farm Journal. Eauter Flowering- Shrub. The beautiful Deutzia lemolnel. a hybrid between tbe ever popular D. gracilis and D. crenata. is well worthy of a place in the list of desirable Eas ter flowering shrubs. The deutzlas are hardy and should be left outside until about eight weeks before Easter, that giving sufficient time In which to flower them properly. They should be started at a temperature of 50 degrees and afterward advanced to 60 degrees, be yond which they should never be al lowed to go. A higher temperature than this for even a single day will ipoil them. Gardening. Forcing TwiK In Water. From Feb. 1." to March 10 is the time to bring In twigs of flowering fhrubs and trees and put them in a vn se of water in a sunny window sill, where they will open during tin- dreari est month of the year the month be fore spring comes. Among the show lest and most Interesting are the flow ering dogwood, forsythia, apple, pencil, pear, red maple, elm, beech and horse chestnut. Magnolias have the largest flowers of nil, but It is doubtful if any one has succeeded with them. Change the water every day or two. Garden Magazine. Pruning Dewberries. The most common way of managing dewberry plants Is to drive a stake three or four feet high between two bills and tie the young canes from each hill to the top of the stake, cutting their loose ends back to about one foot above the stake. The fruit Is then borne above the new growth, kept clean and can be easily picked. The young canes are allowed to run over the ground at will during the growing season and the next year are tied to the top of the stake, while the old fruiting ones are cut away. Rural New Yorker.
