ASTORIA'S THIRD PARTY.
The organization of the Ijjltor Union-ir-U
of this citv into uVlared politic il
formation, with the equally candid ex
pression of their purpose to comp -1
recognition of their p'an and desire-,
notably alonj; the line of municipal
owner-ship, is, of itself, important
enough to invite general consideration
and prompt recognition. And if, a is
claimed by pome, it is another Demo
cratic project to aid them in vaulting
into the political saddle of Clatsop, it
is entitled to more than piis-in notice,
at ieast at the hands of th" Republicans.
At a juncture of thi-. sort every move
ment of the kind is under supiciou
scrutiny and the Municipal Ownership
I-eague is not liable to escape searchin?
inquiry as to its real independence and
separate purpose. There is absolutely
no reason why it should not take it3
place as a t-'enuin- factor in the local
political world upon it- own. special and
independent basi-, and the A-torian will
give it homst and friendly welcome;
but if it is to I engineer d into al

leaders, then, ?

TRICKY WEATHER.
Juet as Astoria, was glowing and smil
ing and bragging over the superb spell
of soft and sunlit weather that fell to
her lo' during the first five days of la-st
week, a mean trick was turned within
the hour of her boasting, and the bit
terness of a deadly east wind swung
down on her, encarnadining the nases of
hep people, inventing them with cold.s,
and rheumatics and all the discomforts
incidental to such a change, aud abso
lutely freezing the vaunting words up
on their lips. It was a mean and un
timely trick.

CHRIST TH PERSIA.
The solemn announcement i made
that Christ is now in Persia; that He is
again on a pilgrimage of the earth
fighting the same old Adam; He has
been seen, and conversed with, and is
indubitably the Christ. We will concede
there is a good man in Persia; that he
is doing all that one poor human atom
can do for the souls of his fellow?; that
he is pure, and true and wholly lovable,
a real example to his brethren. W ith
this admission we leave the man and his
votaries, sane, and insane, to the muta
tions of time, place and circumstance.

ASTORIA'S FUTURE IS YOURS.
What of the future of this city? Is
it to draw upon the community in an
inocuous way; is it simply to arrive,
with nothing to mark il and make it
notable and realistic and coniieiisating
and worthy of anticipation. What are
Y'OU going to do about it? It iK-longs
to you, and yours the duty of carving
and fashioning it and making it answer
to your ambitions and hopes. Don't let
it creep upon you, listless, void of good
things, charged with inertia, barren of
objectives. It is up to YOU.

has shij's of tirst class fighting material, luit we do not jilaco any tirt
class ships in our second class. Our ve-e!s are good enough TO
LOOK AT, and they will give as good an account as jiohmMc when
Hooded.
There arc a lot of them that have done service in the past that ar
now doing merely police duty, and they seem to he regarded an good
enough to lly the tlag. Many of our fhips are old timers, and yet they
ure carried on our list of KKHlTIMi ships. It would cost 11 fortune
to make the Olytnpia, Dewey's llag.-hip in Manila hay, u fighting
vessel.
The war in the east has taught us one lesson, and that is that the
battleship is the only vessel to carry on a war or TO IHXTDK A
WAR, at a critical issue. We must build more battleships if we are
to hold our own.
We have twenty-seven battleships now in course of construction,
and by 190$ we will employ 65,000 men in "tir navy, where now wo
employ only a'tf00, and thus far we are going along strong lines. Rut
our navy will never be like England's, for we are not building enough
SOU BUILDING FAST EXOrCill to catch up to her.
Following the fads of various persons, we find among our twenty
seven fighting ships some millions of dollars wasted on four monitors.
In the harbor of Manila 1 have seen one of them rolling twenty times
a minute trying to hit something with a twelve inch gun, much as I
have seen a woman trying to hit a hen with a stone.
Three submarine ships came to the navy yard last Fpring for re
pairs. Heaven only knows when they will get away! As soon as you
repair one end of a craft THK OTHER END needs rebuilding.
The insides have been wholly rebuilt, and the only thing I can tee to
do with them is to build new hulls. .
In 1008 we shall rank on paper as the feeon-l naval power of the
world, but if we strike from the list such ship as the sainted Oregon,
now real I v a second rate battleship, from the lir-t line we will rank
among the sea powers of the world only sixth, possibly fifth, but that,
will be the REST RATE that we could reach.
We tnii-t continue to build ship-, and in passing let me say that the
government built .-hip is us good as, if not better than, any. 'I he Con
nectieut, svhich is now building in the Rrooklyn navy yard, will dis
tance its mates which are being built in private yard-. Rut the real
test will come later on when the COST OF REPAIRS is known.
After all, there is only one kind of nhip to build, and that is the
SPEEDY RATTLES I MR of the line. All others above tho water
are no earthly good. The armored cruiser is beautiful TO LOOK
AT, with its graceful lines and its buoyancy on the water.
The recent visitors from England showed this as they lay at the
head of the line in the North river. In war they may be good for
eomething, such as scouting in the Caribbean. We have a few for
such purposes as a Santo Domingo difficulty.
BUT FOR ACTUAL WORK AND FOR ACTUAL RE8ULT8 IN WAR
WE MUST DEPEND UPON THE BATTLESHIP OF THE LINE.
