I I Mlittill Orchard, the Idaho dynamiter, and general murderer for the Miners' Union, is at once a product and a type, and of a sort that cannot be stamped out too quickly, nor too absolutely. WLen the system of unionism goes to the length of maintaining such creature for such purposes as were assigned to him. and which be performed with all a criminal zealot's avidity and despatch and cun ning, it is time the country took up the matter of labor amalgamation?, sifted their prospectuses to a finality and de clared war, social and commercial, upon the men that subscribe to such doc trines and prat-ions. Unions are all right and often essential, for the perpetuation of correct organic condi tions of labor as against the encroach ments of sordid and exacting capital but the deliberateness and sanguinary nature of the combine to which he owed alliance and rendered the mo-t abject" serfr-ieo, U PI'I'3r--rit. that there is nothing left to the communi ties affected, but to invoke repri-al-that are, perhaps not statutory, but Tione-tlie-le--i nc e aty and certainly more effective. And, in passing, it is but just to say, that the law, or public sentiment, or such other agency as gov ern the relative condition- between the employer and employed, and e-peeially in the mining section- of the coat, 'newl revi-ing and amending to a point when- the unions shall have cause to abandon their reckless and murderous policies, in deference to ju-ter and fairer tr.atment at the hands of the mine owners and kindred employers. The later have a good deal to th-ir dis credit in the pa- and even at present, and are subject to any limit of criticism and regulation at the hands of the courts and society in general, and the early adjustment of the blunders and impositions of the employing cla-s in this relation, will have the prompter and more -alutary effect in riddirr.' the jtvorld of such things as the Orchard-. Rut riches, for which we are so earnestly striving. Faerificing health and comfort and peace of mind, and character, even, what do they bring? Ask Rockefeller, despised among men. There are l,31"i,tWi acie- of alfalfa growing in the live states of Colorado. Utah, California. Idaho and Washing ton, and the acreage is inerea-iug greatly each year. It is good for four crops a year in all these states and in some of them for six. In connection with the irrigation project it is prov ing the most valuable of any crop which can be rais-d. Occasionally there is really a farmer who tinds his way out of the old lea ten rut. Thus the Council RliitVs Nonpareil tells of a fanner living near there who got the notion that some thing besides wheat, corn and pumpkins might be raised at a profit. So he tried cucumber seed growing. All the cucum bers were left on the vines tint il tiny were well ripened, and then cleaned of all the seeds, lst week he marketed over 28,010 pounds of the seed. This amount of seed, when properly cleaned, will net him somewhere in the neigh borhood of $4.)00, for all his work. A net profit per acre of $72 is the result of the season's work. Mr. Hartford also had in about three acres of squashes which he seeded, and received nearly as much per acre as for the cucumber. A patent every day for tho year l!MW is the telephone record. Dining the last year there was issued about three hundred and sixty-five patent for in cut inn relating to telephony, on an axeiage of one daily. 0 With JslOO.ttOO.lHM worth of gold bars on hand awaiting coinage, the lcuer mini began operations February 1st.
