THE THING TO DO. i A movement is on foot for the orga nization of a Young Men' Republican Club in this city, and the initial steps will be taken next week. It is the very thing to do, and will have a beneficial effect on the coming campaign in many waya. In the first place it will inject new blood into the county organization and give impetus to every polioy and ev ery meeting held in republk-an inter esta this spring. It is necessary to en thuse the young people and enlighten tbem on tde gravest duties of their citizenry, besides giwng them their place in the party councils and activi ties. This is especially true of the first Witers .0 are in need of encouragement and who have to be assisted in the for mation of their earlier partisan obli gations and duties. These young men are bound fo be the leaders in due time and the sooner th-y acquire the neces sary acumen and experience in ways po litiean the sooner will they be able to shoulder their responsibilities and as sume the direction of party destinies. New blood is essential in all the impor tant elements of daily life and the po litical parties can not have too much of it. Rerivication and new energies are always welcome to the men who have carried the burdens for years in the partisan field and the proposition to rouid -p the youner-as will be gre"t-d vitii r :e trn'tifk-ution uncll sides. It cannot be done too soon for the good of Clatsop county and Astoria. o THE WARNING FROM PORTLAND. The loss and disaster attendent upon the recent fire in Portland has it warning for Astoria. The wiping out of a whole block and the fringes of another there, in a few hours, with the accompanying mortal horrors is not unlikely to lie repeated in this city at any time, unless the utmost caie is taken in the disposition of iuflarnables. Astoria, with her mile! of woodr-n struc tures, all of them in close contm't, of fers a treniendou- field for sudden visi tations of this sort, and aside from the public arrangenienls for meeting' and .defeating such a coniiutfency.tiie people ii the city should cultivate, as an art, the faculty of clou and cautious dispo sition of fire. It is alright to siy ''we are careful," the question is, ARE WE? , o THE POPULAR SHIP. The i-tearnsip Roanoke seems to lie in heavy and promiscuous demand in com mercial circles on this coast. Her own ers no sooner get her lined up on some definite run, than one or more com panies are after her for duty on anoth er. THE NINE SPOT MAN. Did you ever see a lot of nine-spot men who had it ia for a business m.n n.l didn't know whv! Kvfr hear the jtanj! c,lrd home man who had made a success of what he undertook while they have been chewtnf and, spitting and lushing at the same old job they monkeyed with fifteen years ago? Ever se? a man who gloried in in an other's success and take a straggler by the hand and sayi "I'm glad to ee you succeed." Ever seen any of these thing t Of course you hate. You see them every day. Then there are downs of reptilians who will greet you with a smile and stab you in tne Wk because vou attend td your busi ness and succeed. Whether they can do as well or not, there are always plenty of the venomous knockers who are so filled with envy and pealousy that they can't be decent when some one else wins. Thev fight you and lie about you for no other reason tha'ttJW' down. In short no one Has ueuoeo them any better than Shakespeare has when be said: "Vou have enemies who know not why they are, but like the village cur, bark because their fel lows do." o EDITORIAL SALAD. As a rule the male shirk marries a woman who kuows all about the big stick. s A happy marriage is the usual re sult when love is adulterated with a little common sen-e. o A rolling stone gathers no moss, but it is almost liable at any time to fall into something soft. tu appear before the footlights and be gin a tour of the United States, o The attempt to abolish football at Harvard University is going on slowly, owing to the difficulty of finding any to abolish. was wrong and should be changed are wrong I the King thundered out "I am neger wrong," Take it away and correct the mis take!" Tie curiosity of woman, who ex amined some colored lock she noticed in San Bernardino couuty recently, result ed in the unearthing of a turquois mine. There are 115 concerns making auto mobiles in the United States; 35,000 Amereian ears were sold last year in country; capital invested $150,000,-000. An olive complexion is the correct thing in England now. So golden hair has "gone out." Golden hair and a Japanese complexion are not a pret ty combination. 0 The women of Center, Neb., may use the bath tub only on Thursday, which is set aside as "ladies day" by the barber, who is proprietor of the only tub in the town. o A New York woman recommends a novel remedy for cinder in the eye, viz, a loop of horsehair- run up under the lid. Of course the hair should be thoroughly sterilized before being used.
