Every man, woman and child, whose destinies are interworen with the future of Astoria and Clatsop county, either by birth and family ties or by adapta tion of the individual, or family, to this section, by the building and mainten ance of the borne here, baa strong, in herent claim upon the glory of old Fort Clatsop, the landmark, par excel lence, of this whole northwest; and the people of this city, county and state long with the neighlwr on the north, hould leara no atone unturned, to pre serve the splendid monument of A- fork's earliest history, for the com fort and pridVful sentiment of genera tions to come. The Historical Society of Oregon is deeply interested in the project of ear ing, beautifying and maintaining the famous old site, with the ultimate pur pose of acquiring, and parking the 100 acres lying immediately slxmt it, and rendering it a resort of distinction and historical prominence, and time and the mutations- of congretcional favor may accomplish all that is sought. A memorial, looking to an adequate, appropriation along these lines, is now in the hands of Senator Fulton and the powers at Washington that have to do with the granting and denying of appropriation", and while the news from there in this behalf, is a hit discourag ing for the present session, fruition may come with another term and the grate ful privilege he awarded for the restora tion and preservation of this hixtoric spot of earth. Every grain of indiienc, public and private; every atom of interest at borne, and abroad; every scintilla of preitip; with congress should 1 em ployed, constantly ami methodically, to the attainment of f.-dVral a'sWance in the maintenance of one of (lie great outposts that helped amazingly in the construction of the verv federation from which the aid is sought. If a man has the misfortune to ke his wife, and there is no member of the family to take her place, ha be gins to realite that a housekeeper is costly luxury. Besides, the first expen? of her week ly earnings, there will be vast differ ence in the cost of running the house for .without a personal interest, many of the Utile economic of housekeep ing will not be practised. Jack London is in Chicago, and the usual riot has broken out, What we like about Jack is that he is so quiet and restful" Sonie of these, socialistic writers and speakers are noisy and ram pant, but Jack'c voice is ever soft, gentk and low, an excellent thing in So cialist, and he loves peace and quietude, j Chicago Evening Post. Annual reports of the Philippines Commission are dry reading now that the bolomen of the district of Bostou hsve been pacified. The motto of Hoke Smith's organ is, "llie 'journal covers i,eorgia like the dew," but it is inferable from the remarks of the "Atlanta Constitution" that if Smith gets the Ciovernorship Georgia will be covered with mildew. By commission or otherwise, to in crease general confidence in the charity hospitals will always be desirable, so long as many of the sick poor prefer to suffer lather than go to them.
