; CAPE TOWN, Jsn. 28. All of th
Storiet of diamond smuggling and di:
mood thieving have Wn revived by re
cent draaiatie event which have oecur
d right her ia South Africa. Not long
go Captain Jenner, chief f the detec
tive department at Kimberley, wrote to ;
one. of hit subordinate, a nun named'
Pamant, asking him to explain certain'
diamond transactions in which he had
been involved. Damant'a answer was
iuWide. And in South Africa auicide in
thi particular i considered the equiva- j
lent of confession.
But this tragic event wat one of the,
main factor in bringing about a re-
w.rl.kL illicit dimnoiu bUTlUff trial
which has just been concluded at the
criminal session. The amount involv
ed wa the largest on record, something
like $180,000, and extraordinary interest
attached to the trial owing to. the high
aoeial position of the accused, one David i
McGilL Mr. McGill, who ia a well known (
diamond buyer at Kimberley, wa ae-
euaed of purchasing diamonds from a
teller who had no diamonds to tell..
The law penalties such a transaction,;
because, generally speaking, a person
who ,daJi in diamonds without a li
cense, must have acquired, the stones
in an iliejritunate way, eiiwr nMuK
tolen them himself or purchased them
from the actual thief.
Ia aa Oiianiied Gang.
At present the De Beers Company!
estimates that they are losing nearly
$2,000,000 anually owing to the clever
tactics of an organird gang of I. B. B.'a
(illicit diamond buyer), but in the Mc
Gill case the teller of the diamond was
Damant. And the moat remarkable
thing about it waa that Dement wa
the late head clerk In the RimberWy
detective department. But aa the de
partment in the course of it duties
naturally acquire a eonMerWe quan
tity of tone which it subsequently
dispooe of, it might new have occur
red to a buyer that the chief clerk was
selling otherwise than in the ordinary
course of departmental routine.
The main question at the trial was
whether Mcfiill knew that Pamant wa
dealing in illicit diamond acquired for
illicit purjK, It w admitted by
the accuse,! that transaction aggregat
ing large sum of money were omitted
from the register, which ha had certi
fied to be correct.
The iurv. after a protracted hearing
of the evidence brought in a verdict of
not guilty" on all of the 147 count
of the charge.
Then it we that a remarkable scene
occurred in court. Sir John Buchanan,
the judge trying the case, had distinctly
tummed up against McOill and he ex
preed his dissent at the verdict in the
at rouges t possible term.
Officer Aided the Thieve.-
But the case did rvult in bringing
to light many remarkable fact in con
nection with the working of the I. Tk B.
act. Dauiant eema to have practically
nsed the whole machinery of hi secret
sen-ice not to stamp out the trade in
illicit diamond buying, but to encour
age, it for the purpose of carrying on a
private traffic on his own account.
Accordins to a statement made by
Colonel H."ri, a De Beer director, in
the course of the trial, IV Beer lose
about $100,000 in atol.-n stone every
mouth. Thia U chiefly due to the opera
tion of a skilful gang with cleverly laid
plan who get the diamond out of the
country by way of Rhodesia and Natal
to Kurope. The gang ia understod to
include women who have the reputa
tion of expert at thia type of robbery.
So great ha been the skill of these
women that not a woman hat been de
tected in connection with thi particu
lar and peculiar form of crime for a
great many year.
