NOTHING TO STOP HER. We have heard nothing to indicate any opposition to the work .that this eity has rut out for herself ia the nut ter of taking a strong initiative in the building of a line from here to Tilla mook, but we expect, at the plan de velop to hear a good deal of it. There can be nothing tangible in any obstruc tion from here; if any are raised they will be inspired by outside influences. There ia nothing to stop Astoria from launching this important project but ler own inanition. nd that can be overcome by a genuine and hearty campaign by those who have the good of the city at heart and by a diplo matic use of all the public spirit that can be roused. It is all in embryo at this moment, but a cordial, sensible, emphatic endorsement of the scheme will go far toward shaping it into a tangible, practical and wholesome pro position, appreciable, and appreciated, from one end of the community to the other. All it need is INITIATIVE. TOADYISM GONE MAD. Wfien the American does taka on the style and status of a toady, he, and ibe, fills the bill to perfection. Just bow there ia a fool mania for doing something for Mis Alice Roosevelt, to accentuate the fact of her engagement, and subsequent man-fog, to Congress man Long worth. It is in abominable taste, the whole line of suggest vty; and the fulfillment of tny part of the proposed benefaction would be tanta mount to downright insult to both families. The mere fact of the promi nence of the bride to be lends the qual ity of added and de!ilrate offense, for the actual merit of a gift dwvll in the necessity, or aptitude of the donee, to receive, use and appreciate the endow ment. ASTORIA IN 1906. AVhen the pre-ent year slisll b- a. old a I'MKi. it should be the Isast of every Astorian that he has roiitrilnitol, in some measure to her poromm-wl ad vancement j that he IihS lent willing aid to her every purpose end has not ought to baffle nor deny her progress in any line; that he has gone volun tarily to ber public amblies, and dis eased, weighed, and given an intetii. to every scheme of development that has arisen ia ber behalf; that be hss yielded money, time and influence to her up building; that bis band nor voice nor prestige ha been, lent, dur ing the year, with any other view thai GOOD, SOUND ADVICE. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer utter the following which ia logical and timely, and we express our co-invidvnc with it, by re publishing it: it ia said that more life insurance premiums fall due in the present three month period, December, January and February, than during any other por tion of the year. "A sword to all policy holders just now is timely. . . . 'Revelation made of the conduct of New York life insurance companies have disturbed somewhat the old feel ing of security in thee concerns, tad have similarly given a rude jar to confidence in life insurance as a means of providing an ok! age competence, or for making provision for a dependent family in the event ot the death of the bread winner. This confidence ha not been restored, and because it hss been destroyed many policy holder will be strongly tempted to pass their prem iums and let their policies lapse. "To do so would not be wise. There has been bad management of many of the leading New York companies. Re sources have been wasted, to be sure; but the portion wasted is relatively small after all. Tie insurance coin panics are solid, solvent and sound financially. Their incomes have been enormous, and the unearned salarie and commission paid all told make a very small part of the aggregate reve nue. The greater part by far ia well invested, and the values of all insur ance company properties are multiply ing rapidly, "The policy holders investments are secure. Their premium are fe, and will constitute an accumulation that will make provision fr the future. The real effect of the disclosures made will be to cheapen the cost ot insur ance. They have not injured the securi ties upon which the financial soundness of life insurance rests. Pay your premium when it become due. Do not lose what yon have si ready paid in. Xo safer provision for the future can be made thsn invest ment in a life insurance policy. If kept up it will afford full provision for the future." STEEL FROM BLACK SAND. An interesting account of experiments in the smelting of magnetic iron ore by electricity i given in a late bulletin issued by the United State geological survey. The experiments were conducted in Portland last October, and the ore fed to the sp.-cially constructed electric fur naces was the magnetic irons or magne- site obtained at Hammond station near Astoria, on the Columbia river. A cur rent of fifty-seven volts, tnd 1000 am peres, leading to twenty-five carbon electrodes four Inches square and forty- light inches long, did the smelting. The slags were a light in color as those from any well regulated furnace, and steel was successfully produced at every run. Reduction in every ease,, as said to be complete. The value of these experiments I ap parent to anyone familiar with condi tions. There is known to exist enor mous quantities of these sands along II the rivers and ocean beaches of the Pacific Northwest. These sands are rich in magnetic irons of superior steel- producing quality. The wealth of wst- power msks-s i possible to smelt in electrical furnaces at a minimum of cost that is mll compared with the minimum cost of any similar process nywhere else in the world. And last, the iron or black sand deposits and the water power are contiguous, which means that nature has assembled ore id fuel at the same place. Tlie advantages are obvious. The conditions sliown by the successful con luct of the black sand experiments Portland last summer hava an Im portant b'sring on the industrial future the Pacific Northwest. Thi experi ments should not be discontinued. They ere exploiting a future resource. Seattle Post-Inteligencer. HE'LL DO SIGHT ALRIGHT. President Roosevelt is evidently In esrne-t in his determination to stop the stealing of the public domain which ss been going ou too long, and b.- has no patience with lax officials who do not attend to their duty strictly in this matter or who makes things easy for the thieves, out of consideration for their feeling apparently. Dissatisfied with the result of the prosecution of wo ot the biggest offenders, who fenc ed ia 22,000 acre of Government land in Nebraska, the ssme east which ex cited Secretary Hitchcock's displeasure for the inadequate outcome of hi four years' work, the President has removed the I'nilcd State District Attorney who conducted the case and who re fused to resign. The men confessed guilt, and the Federal Judge let them off easily, a the Washington author! ties regarded it. Part of their punish ment was to remain ia the custody of the I'nited 8tate marshal for the term of six hours. It appears this alert ollicial delegated the duty of keeping them in custody to the prisoner's coun se, and that worthy spent the time with them at the Omaha Cluh Of course that marshal is now looking for a job. ' o PROPER PROGRAM. While they art about It the nava authorities seem determined to Make a clean sweep of this hating business at Annapolis, It is officially stated that the Hoard of Investigation hss already obtained sunk-lent evidence to place on trial a number of midshipmen for that offense, and their rase will be taken up as soon a the court-martial of Midship men Coftin and Vanderveer is com pleted. And only case that hava oc curred during the present scholastic year are to be taken up at that. ) EDITORIAL SALAD. Morale seems to be about I fugitive as morals in Santo Domingo politics. Hut tiiodeia medical scionc seems to refute that. Coroner' Physic n O'llsnlon, of Manhattan, had a rase on Christmas afternoon which apparently fully justifies the time-honored phrase, Mrs, Mary McCord, aged 60, dropped dead Saturday night in a butcher shop while buying a turkey for the Christmas dinner, and the autopsy Dr O'llsnlon held revealed the fact that the woman's death was caused by s rupture of one of the ventricle of the heart. Neighbor said she had been deserted by her htwband soma time ago, and had been grieving constantly ever since, tirief and disappointment are the causes usuaiy assigned for a broken heart. 111 wm OF Frankfort, Ky, Recommends Vino! u the Best Curt for Stom ach Troubles.
