MEMORIAL TO CONGRESS Urgent Need of a Meeting of AU Citi tu PcTotod to th Pretenration of Notable Places and Mouments Good Work Now Afoot. Tbe City of Astoria and the County of Clatsop art peculiarly rich "in point nJ place, of pkndi4 Stt. Victory indeed, tho recent magnificent Lewi A "tWk exposition was born ia "this county one hundred years ago; besides many other and lesser phase of his torical interest hare inherent adapta . two to these fields, and it behoove every citizen of the city and county to 'jealously guard and render permanent the particular and prk-eW memento of the past. The Oregon Historical Society, with headquarter at Portland, has taken Try definite part in helping to preserve torn of the most valuable of these local maters, and its membership here num bers about fifteen people, a sufficient nucleus, if kept in constant touch with the important duties devolving upon them, to make permanent and con spicuous, the notable place and monu ment indigenous to the soil. The Astoria contingent might well get together and stay together in fairly constant attendance upon these issuee, and bo in ready touch with the parent orgaxiation, so as to amplify its pur poses, not only in a local sense, but in the broader concerns of the State. At its last session in Portland, the Historical Society appointed a special committee consisting of Judge J. Q. A. Bowlby, Hon. Jay Tuttle and President George H. Himea, to draft a memorial to Congress praying for an appropria tion of $10,000 for the erection of a monument upon the site of old Fort Clatsop, where the society now owns three acre of land; and it is no more than just, and right, that every man, and woman, in thi county, should lena an eager and aidful hand in the great project, either in person, or through the instrumentality of me friend in posi tion to ait, either in eongre or out of it, and whether they belong to the Historical Society or not. It 4s large matter and ha no limits fixed when it wines to measure the aid that may be given it It is alway well to do thing in a consecutive way and at seasonable time, and therefore, there should be an early meeting of the local member ship of the society, along with hundred of other equally interested citizens. It may be Congress will grant the aM asked for np-M th contingency that the State shall do its share in tht nttcr, and thi but open another ave nue for the frcUe of local Jnfluene and good will toward so imperative and promising a- veuture, and it is the hope of many that this meeting will be call ed very soon and that it will be pro lific el an activity along these hue that will result In a splendid volume of success: to which the Astoriaa will lend its best and timeliest assistance whenever it may be invoked.
