of conjecture. The accident i said to
have been due to a lack of ventilation
in the tunnel. A work train of sixteen
cars left the New York Central station
soon after daybreak. It ws drawn by
a gigantic "Ping Pong" engine. The top
of its short smokestack clears the roof
of the Park avenue tunel bv onlv a few
inches.
At Fiftieth street the big engine be
came stalled on a "dead centre" Engi
neer Deyo tried to get the piton mov
ing by starting the exhaut but in
spite of his efforts he could not get the

The fireman and two brakemen in
the cab with Deyo began to cotight as
the hard coal gas from the locomotive
firebox came pouring down upon them,
deflected by the roof and walls of the
tunnel
As the engineer, still working with

and painfully crawl down off the
motive cab into the tunnel.
