were lying unconscious at the track
side when foond. "
What happened to them i a matter
of conjecture. The accident i said to
have been due to a lack of ventilation
in the tunnel. A work train of sixteen
cars left the New York Central station
soon after daybreak. It ws drawn by
a gigantic "Ping Pong" engine. The top
of its short smokestack clears the roof
of the Park avenue tunel bv onlv a few
inches.
At Fiftieth street the big engine be
came stalled on a "dead centre" Engi
neer Deyo tried to get the piton mov
ing by starting the exhaut but in
spite of his efforts he could not get the
Dig machine to turn a wheel
The fireman and two brakemen in
the cab with Deyo began to cotight as
the hard coal gas from the locomotive
firebox came pouring down upon them,
deflected by the roof and walls of the
tunnel
As the engineer, still working with
rtight and main at the throttle h-ver
to get his engine moving, looked at his
three companions be saw them slowly
and painfully crawl down off the
motive cab into the tunnel.
' They tried to run back out of reach
of the deadly coal gas, but before they
had gone a dozen steps fells uncon
scious in the ditch.j Deyo'a train was
stalled on the main track a peril to
traffic, and" he dared not leave the cab
for a moment.
Consciom of the danger that he too
might succumb to the fume of the coal
gas. he wet a big bunch of cotton wa-tt
at the tank and platseie.1 it over liis
mouth and nose. iut the waste wa
little protection. Deyo wa till trying
to get the engine off the "dead centre"
. when his head began to whirl. With "a
last effort of tonciou-neis he pulled
Lack the throttle lever. .Jut then a
pushing engine came up behind and
truck the long train ami the impact
started the locomotive. The. sIum-U
knocked peyo, weak and dizzy, oir hi
balance, and he fell to the floor of the
tub unconscious.' With the throttlw
wide open the locomotive gathered
speed. Deyo'a body re-twl o.e to the
len door of the firebox and t'ie flames
open dor of the firebox and the flaine
began to scorch him at they leaped out
of the furnace.
All the way through the long Park
avenue tunnel the train flew. The
switches were right and the drawbridge
over the Harlem liver was fortunatelv
closed.
The train dashed into the MoHhaven
yard of the New Haven Road, and ran
into a light engine on the main track
