It takes time to determine which of the precious habiU we want to dispense with; and bavin? concluded, it takes time to let go. The time required to resume, how ever ,need not be calculated. 0 Between Clatsop Spit and Tillamook Head there i- an estimated bulk of twenty billions of tons of black sand, bearing, according to Dr. Day, the re liable government eert, 60 cent in gold to the ton. 1 iyuic this out, some body, and see w'.mt you me neglecting! He has learned himself what it is to be a target. o A Chicago paper argues that the re moval of the duty on hides would put down the price of shoes. And so it might, in Chicago. o The difference might be expressed this way : That while several of our foreign visitors have been Admiral, now a man named Togo is coming. o Thoe who delay their . Christmas shopping beyond today will find the nose guard and the shin boards helpful suggestions in their business. The country i relieved to learn from Senator Tillman that it is no worse off than usual there being nothing the mat ter with it except everything. 0 Admiral Dewey is endeavoring to have the American navy strengthened and rejuvenated against the coming of Admiral Togo and his Japanese fleet. , . The 0ar of Russia is not exactly ner vous, but he would like to know what they have got for him in that room where they keep the Christmas present. 0 It is agreed that the Americans are rendering the canal lone healthful, and that is an achievement in line wiih making the dirt fly to the best advantage. 0 President Eliot admits that rich men have some few joys, one of them per haps being that there is nothing to com pel them to read lectures about the use of -wealth. 0 Prediction- of war, famine, panic and pestilence are being made for the year 1006. Congress may have to sit through the entire year in order to hold the lid securely in place. 0 Mr. t Carnegie's philanthropic ledger hos that, up to this time, he ha given away $13,000,000, and, as he i only sixty-eight, he still has plenty of time to avoid dying rich. 0 Yes, there have been t-even weddings in the White House, and nothing is more pleasant than ine of tho-e occasion when it is apropos to remember just how many there Vive been. j In his attempt to reopen the ballot boxes Mr. Hearst lost in the court 1 appeal by a judicial vote to 5 to 2. Another way to avoid the dangers of piieumoia incident to inaugurating pre-iilcnU in Marc'i would be to cut out the street carnival features of I'm- pro grim designed chiefly for the benefit o' Washington hotels. Senator Raj ley promises' to support the Pie-id-ni whenever the latter cliani-es to lie right.
