THE MORNING ASTORIAN. ASTORIA, OREGON. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER M, 1905. DOCK, BOAT, SAILOR Yesterday's Happenings On the Local Waterfront! COLUMBIA BAR IS VICIOUS Bar Bound Fleet la and Out Aiie Seen "Steamine" Worth Tuts and Local Steamer Busy News and Comment , Maria. According to one of the veteran btr uloU, emphasised by one of the oldest )a captain crossing the Colu.nbia rir- bar, this it the wont bar of the sea too. The wind ha swept it at from 20 to 60 mile an hour for the past 48 boors, and yesterday the bar was break ing on 17 fathoms ot water, and for some ditance beyond the "whistling buoy." This morning there is a bar bound fleet on the hither aide of the great barrier, made up of the following easels: The British ships Dunboyne and Kynance; the French ship Canibron ne, all off Sand Ilead: The BritUh steamer Croydon and Blackheath, and the American steam schooner JeanieJ with the three-mas tied iiooner Oakland all under the leav of Fort Stevens and in tfie city channel the French bark Eu rope: While on the ocean side of the bar are the steamers Whit tier, Eureka and F. A. Kilburn. These latter will be in before any of the others pass out Captain J. Jensen, of the motor schooner Delia, the Astoria sea-going in fant, reported yesterday that be has made 26 round trips between this port and Xeetucca and Siletx with the Del la since the 1st of June last. It is hoped he will continue to report, regu larly and successfully, but "a realizing glance at the butty little steamer he sails "over the briny deep," compels the inference he will be reported some time, instead of reporting. steamer Major Guy Howard, has return er from Portland, where ahe was eon verted into an oil bupier and subjected to other requisite improvements, and is again doing duty, under Captain Cordon, between the (X U. 4 X. piers and Forts Stevens, Canhy and Colum bia. . The marine reporting on the Portland Oiegoniau is done without much regard to actualities In yesterday's paper the French hark Ait. now rfue her from Hobart Town, i repotted as hat ing beeu seen off thi bar, "and shortly afterward she waa noticed STEAMING North." Well, all the steam in this re lation was "steam-beer," quantity and quslity not reported. Captak) Peter Jordan, of the Melville concluded to have a Christ maa tree at hi home here next week, atid after pur chasing one, and properly supplying fixing for it, he sent up to Cath- lamet for hU nephew Captain Chaa. A. Jordan, of the steamer Jorda, and the rest of the Jordan big and little and now he has bought a second tree and will cheerfully buy and equip a third, if it proves necessary. Christmaa come but once a year. ' The steamer Sue IL Kiiitiore is still hugging .her dock here, waiting for a hance to get over the bar. How about that happy, Twt anxious "young couple who are waiting for the special services of Captain Schrader, ou the high seas? Patience is a virtue worth cultivating, but hard to exercise when folks are waiting to be married. The Harvest Queen came down yes terday with the French bark Europe on her hawsers, outward bound.
