AN ALPINE TRAGEDY.
Tarlllla 8rr ef a Kail Dm the
Matterhera.
"On of the most tbrilling stories lu
Alpine history la tout of Mr. Sloggrtf
'ill on the Matttrhora," write Aubrey
I Blond. -With two Zermatt guide
Alphons Furrer and Augustiu Ueutl
aatta thla young fengltshmaa had
made a quick aacent of the mouutatn
and was a long way down on the re-
tuna Journey. At one apot It is neces
sary to cross a couloir, or gul'y of
now and Ice, and dowu this chaunel
tall Boat of the atones that detad
tnemsetres from the shattered face of
the peak. The leading guide, Furrer,
waa making bis way over when a
tone, dropping from a considerable
height struck him full on the head
and Instantly killed him. The two
o therm, attached by their rope to his
dead body, were unable In their pre
carious foothold to resist the shock and
were immediately swept away down
the couloir at terrific speed. Their
. axes were torn from their grasp, and
Gcatlnetta, who Merer lost consclous-
neea, waa convinced that death must
await them at the end of that awful
journey, but thla man of Iron nerve
kept hla presence of mind and showed
what a stoat heart and a keen Intel
ligence can. do Yea In the meet ds
peratt situation. '
"About 800 feet below the spot where
; the party were carried off a small
bergschruad or cserase ran across the
Ice slop which forma the base of the
, liatteraora on Ita eastern side. This
creraasa la not always openIn fact
la October, 1003, when I weni on to
the mountain to photograph the scene
of thla accident It did not exist at all
Beneath It are ice cliffs, and aay one
shooting the crevasse and falling over
these would bar a sheer drop which
must Immediately be fatal, but In Mr.
Uoggetta ease the crack waa several
feet wide and into it the two still liv
ing mea and their dead companion
wer precipitated. The chasm waa
partly tilled with atones and sand, and
Mr. 8loggett fell face down, tientl
netta, though terribly bruised, without
an instant s delay seised the helpless
form of hla employer, pulled him out
of the position la which be lay, almost
suffocating, and cleared the sand out
of his throat and eyes.
"Hla Jaw waa broken, and hla bruise
- were area worse than those of Gentl
actta, but no other bones were broken.
The disaster waa already bad enough,
but at any moment an even more ter
rible catastrophe threatened the two
' poor wounded men In the crevasse.
Too couloir waa, aa I have said, a nat
oral channel for falling atones, and It
waa jaat the hottest hour of tbs day,
when the anow waa thawing fast and
loosening from Its fetters the missile
it had earlier held faat frozen to the
mountain. It was imperatire to lose
no time la waiting for assistance front
the other parties who were on the Mat
terhora, 8o the guide and the English
man, without exes, bruised, shaken
and weak, started on the desperate
task of climbing back up that glassy,
blood stained wall, a task bard enough
eren for aa uninjured and fully equip
ped party.
"How It waa accomplished Gentlnet
4a declares he does not know, but by
an extraordinary display of pluck and
aklU the two at length reached tbelr
old tracks and gained a place of safe
ty. Assistance waa now at band, and
with the help of the other parties th
wounded men eventually arrived at
the Schwarxe hotel. . Though laid up
for many weeks after, both in the end
made an excel lent recovery. I'oor Fur
rera body woe with much difficulty
brought down next day from the cre
vasse." A Rasa at War.
It Is not always policy to acknowl
edge a defeat. A little coolness at the
critical nioffient sometimes saves the
day, as In the case described In Mr.
Ripley's "Story of Company V." In a
close encounter during the civil war
two soldiers, one from each army,
came face to face within short ranee.
Each put up bis gun and fired, as It
subsequently appeared, his last car
tridge. Both missed. The bullet of one
man burled Itself In a trc;, and the
shot of the other passed throcgh the
coat of his enemy. Each man, know
ing his ammunition was gone, aupposed
himself to be at a disadvantage.
One of them made a great sbow of
reloading his gun, and, stepping for
ward, demanded a surrender. The
other threw down bis anus with a
groan.
"If I had another cartridge, I would
never aurrender:' he exclaimed.
"That's all right" calmly remarked
the captor, marching off his prisoner.
"If I had another, you may te sure
w a .
i soouiau c nav asxea you to aur
render." Th Iaraoraat Earptlaa Waaiea.
It Is difficult for. English women to
realize the blanknesa of mind resulting
from th seclusion of women. It Is
true of most that they have never even
seen a book and rarely an Arabic news
paper. Practically none can read.
They have not even picture book.
Anything like serious conversation Is
unknown. They can talk about their
babies or their trinkets, but nothing
lse. Their needlework It mechanical
embroidery. They cannot make their
own clothet. They know nothing of
what la passing in the outer world, nor
do tbey even realize that ther Is an
outer world. In the country the peas
ant women sre not secluded. They
are acquainted with the ordinary op
erations of agriculture, but In th
towns they know nothing of this. They
hare no Idea or wish to know where
a potato comes from or how it grows,
