the victory uf the Democrats of the
city thU morning, and doea it in the
hope they will make the most of their
eucceases. It U not whimpering, nor
complaining, nor making face; it .is
taking ita defeat in good part with a
Urge and abiding hope for the next
time. When that time come it will be
found ready for the scrap and it will
ttay in it on whatever line it shall
elect, till the ple sMall deUtmine th
issues, just as they have done in this
case, only they'll prohably give a ver
dict more to our liking next time.
Democrat, the town is your. You've
won it. Make good use of it or well
excoriate you with criticim that ahall
w it her you. You're pretty good fellows,
but you are given, to blunders and
blunders kill. Do your duty and well
do ours.
The election passed off with wit any
peculiar or extraneous circumstances -x-cept
the extraordinary msjorities that
were awarded to some of the candidate,
and the day was unmarked by anything
diaagreeable or disgraceful except re
sults An ordinary strong vote wa
cat, from which the judge cast out
but 39 votes as iregvilar, leaving the
total expression by ballot at 1022, in
cluding ten scattering votes for mayor
and police commissioner. No arrests
were made, which is the one remarkable
thing in the history of the, day consid
ering the fact ttyiti Democrat wenr
overwhelmingly in the forefront of the
battel, but alls well than ends this aide
of the jail door. ;

yesterday that W. E. Corey will not
resign his position as president of the
United States Steel Corporation arid
further that members of the board of

the Tribune from Pitt-burg, eay: J. IV
Corey, uncle of William Kllis Corey,
president of the I'nited States Steel
vVrporathn, issued a remarkable letter
yesterday afternoon addreaeed to the
"newspaper reporters of Pitsburg." la
it Mr. Corey tells of how his quirt life
hs been made miserable by the de
mands upon him for information about
hi nephew's affairs, and says he has
decided to make good ue of the addi
tional information he poaaeases.
Mr. Corey tells in hla letter of hsv
ing recently given $20,000 to the fend
for the relief of the suffering Jews in
Russia and ears that more money is
needed. He says that, inasmuch as the
people like to read about scandal they
ahould be compelled to pay for it. He
declares that he had a number of let
ters which were exchanged between him
self and Andrew Carnegie, Charle XI.
Schwab and E. R. Corey, which he Is
ready- to hand over to the public for
1 100,000, the total amount to be ap
plied to the Hebrew relief fund. He
does not care, he says, in what sums
the money is subscribed or whether it
is made up by one individual, one hun
dred, one thousand, or a million. In giv
ing the letters to the public, in consid
eration of the above mentioned amount,
Mr. Corey says he will guarantee the
contributors "that they will get their
money's worth, or their money will be
refunded."
Mr. Corey was seen after he had is
sued W statement and declared he waa
in earnest about the matter.

Southern Pacific Railway Company has
recorded a patent of 73,00 acres of
desert land lying along Uie rsilnut
