SUNDAY, DECEMBER j, 1905. ASTORIA. OREGON. A HUGO TREASURE, L lj 11 ---iit I it ll ataaaaaee f lk Fnasowa Writer' Iaa Many Telunble relics that of late years have found their way Into the houses of the wealthy and adorn the nop windows of the antique dealers are not only Interesting from their rarity or association, but alto In the manner In which they come Into the bands of the dealer. The following story told by a dealer may Illustrate this fact and tell how a priceless relic cams near to being thrown away: Some years ago, wbeu staying In tht Bttle Island of tJuerasey, In the Eng lish channel, which for so many years was the residence of Victor Hugo dur ing his exile from France, I was go ing through one of the old streets and strayed Into a secondhsnd furniture store on the chance of finding some thing that might be interesting. Among several odd pieces I found the bottom ef an old Chippendale dressing mirror. talons the mirror, the center of which had been hollowed out to form an tnlstand. The oddness of the piece attracted aoy attention and upon questioning the dealer be Informed me that K was a part of a Jot of rubbish that bad been thrown out of HaatertUe Hooae, wbera Ylctor Husjo bad Mrsd sad which la etui preferred intact by bis family Just as be left It npoa bit return to France. Tbls old bouse la fall ef costly antique treasures with wbJda the an tbor tored to surround himself, and tb tatter an apptteaOoa to the caretaker Is taaay shown erer the place and 1 tbe table and bed need by bin la bis aM study at tbe top of tbe boos la wnict be wrote so many of bis weeks and watched tbe shores ef bis betored country, from which be thought him self forerer an exile. Tbls boose and Its treasures being so carefully guarded by tbe descend ants of Victor Hugo, I wondered bow a piece Bke tbe Inkstand could bare been thrown away and hesitated to belters that tt really bad come from where the dealer said It did, the price asked for It being bnt a few francs. I decided to think tt orer before pur chasing, and m a few dsys railed around again. Upon Inquiring for the Inkstand, the dealer (aid, with many apologies, that 1 was too late, and ex plained matters as best be could. Dur ing the summer months the Hugo fam ily pay a rlslt to the island a few weeks, and prior to their arrlrsl the bouse la thoroughly cleaned, etc. A new maid, seeing an old box, as she thought, threw It away with the rub bish, and It was sold by a junk man to tbe dealer. A few days after my rlslt to him M. Georges and Mile. Jeanne Hugo, grandchildren of the author, strolled Into the same store, and, looking around, espied the Ink stand. They Immediately Inquired as to bow It came Into his possession, and after telling them the particulars they Informed him that It was sn Im preVtoed Inkstand that Victor lingo bad used for many years. perhaps the most successful song of modern times Is "The Lost Chord." whose sale In Great Britain baa ex-1 cesded 250.000 copies. The story of Its composition, aa told by Mr. Wllleby &i bis "Master of English Muilc," II tartrates that In art, aa in statesman lip, success came to those Who knew th seasons when to talc Caseation by tb hand. For nearly three weeks Arthur Sey mour Bullirsn hud watched by the bed stte of a dying brother. One night, when tbe end was not far off and bis brother wss sleeping, he chanced to come across some verse of Adelaide Procter's which fle years before be bad tried In rain to set to music. In the silence of that night watch be lead them orer again and almost In stantly their musical expression was conceived. A strsy sheet of music paper was at hand and he began to write. The music grew and be worked en, delighted to be helped while away tbe hours of watching. Aa be pro gressed he felt sure the music was what be bad sought for and failed to find on the occasion of his first attempt to set the words. In a short time It was complete and not long after In the publisher's hands. IV'oaldnl Take It Oat U Trad.
