FOR POLICE COMMISSIONERS John W. Bablidge, six year term. W. C. Laws, two year term. FOR SURVEYOR Alfred S. Tee. SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS Jamei F. Kearney. FOR COUNCILMAN FIRST WARD Karl Knoblock. FOR COUNCTLMEN SECOND WARD James J. Robinson. R. M. Leather. FOR COUNCILMAN THIRD WARD C. A. Leinenweber. REPUBLICAN NOMINEES. Tie Repblican ticket presented for the consideration of the electors of As toria at the coming municipal election, is manifestly the best that can be of fered as to personnel. The policies be hind these men is business-like and wholesome and means something for the city. It means that the encroach ment upon the debt-limit of the charter will stop, and a receding movement set in, in that behalf; it means clean, straightforward, business manipulation of the finances for the general good; it means honest retrenchment in public ex penditurea along all lines, until the nor mal limits are again in force; it means that the police commission will do its whole duty by the force as well as the people, and take its place in tin- admin istration that the law gives it, without leaving the functions of police supervis ioi to the lesxer officers; it means the preservation of the present y.tem of regulation of slum-traffic, only it will put the power und tvponiibility for such regulation in the hands of the municipal police and relinquish it n-liunce upon the County officer for the fulfillment of local ordinances by the ubtituted statutes; it mean thut Atoria will la governed by her own charter to the lut limit of its prerogative and requirement and that she will be so governed that her citirens need not blush for the record; and it means, above all else, that the City is not to be thrown wide open to dangers and disorders incident to gambling and dance-halls after the June election. The election of this tick et means the making of decent, credit able hint or r for the city and her people, and the defeat of this ticket mean. jut as surely, the indirect domination of the gambler, the low sport and the macque to the utter undoing of the municipal ity. Look to it, you voters in whoe hands the whole situation rests. 0 PECULIAR RETICENCE. It in a singular circumstance that the Democrat, and hi "Nonpartisan" co adjutor in this campaign, will vocifer ously deny their scheme to pen up the town, in the course of personal conver sation, but neither of their organs has yet had the temerity to declare this in plain type. WHY? o ASTORIA VERSUS NEW YORK. The Tammany Democrats of New York are in a tremendous me for try ing to steal the election from the Citi sens. Why didn't they follow the As toria plan and stand in with the Citi wna, capture their support, lead them to victory and gobble the glory and other perquisite in due season? That's the program here, and that it won't work, will be due to the activity and good faith of the Republican in saving the City and Citizens, from the game. n LOCAL TAMMANY. The Democratic push needs organiza tion. Why not found a loeal Tammany hall here! The tiger needs a lair. (live him one and call the faithful into some sort of cohesive shape. As a phase of hih-fmancing, it cannot be improved upon. The suggestion is offered gratuit ously. New York i a pretty "wide open city, from all accounts. 11ns is gratuitous, also. 0 EVERY DOLLAR A PROTEST. There is reason to believe, horrible as the idea is, that the massacres of Jews occurring in so many places in Russia are caused chiefly by the matig nant influence of the autocracy whose unlimited power is crumbling away. In seeking to guard their own safety, and to retain as much as possible of ab solutism, the autocrat nobles are be lieved to have played upon the old hat red of Jews, and cunningly turned the wild passions of the mob in that direc tion. The slaughter of Jews has been going on for years in southeastern Eu rope, because agents of the autocracy encouraged the' masses to believe that excessive taxes and other burdens of misgovemment are due to greedy ma chinations of the Jews, while the super ior intelligence and education of the Jewish population add to the jealousy of the peasants. The mob assaults on the Jews in Rus sia can not be understood at all un less some subtle diabolism is at work, lashing blind ignorance into a blood thirsty rush upon the innocent. When the Russian Government and people learn from the great subscriptions pour ing in that the sympathies of the most enlightened naions is with the Jews struggling against mob murder and ra pine, the undoubted effect will be to suc cor the downtrodden race, for the relief funds show that the victims are not friendless, and also amount to a world wide protest. 0 TEA POT TEMPEST. The pigmy revolution in the Isle of Pines, consisting of two whoops, three yells and a manifesto, is satisfactorily explained. The movement for independ ence is said to have been supported by a clique of wealthy Americans who have decidedly practical object in view. It is stated on what is believed to be good authority that an American syndicate intends to make the Isle of Pines a sec ond Monaco. It is said to be their in tention to erect upon the island a mag nificent casino and a large number of expensive residences, which will be rent ed for the winter season to wealthy peo ple who wish to spend the winter in that beautiful climate, and at the same time enjoy the sport and excitement which a large gambling house would of fer to them. For the accommodation of those who do not wish to be burdened with a large household, several large ami luxuriously equipped hotels will be built. The Isle of Pinea is near the southern coast of Cuba, and is a de lightful place to spend the winter, but it is not probable that it will ever be utilized as a gambling hell. o REAPING ITS HARVEST. Hi-tory is repeating itself in Russia. She now has a new pretender to deal with. In the very region where Pupat cheff arose in the time of Catherine II., pretending to le Peter Til.,' near Penza, on the banks of the Volga, a region not ed for its agrarian uprisings, a false emperor has appeared, and already has a large following, about 60,000. This, without doubt, means serious trouble for the already distracted empire. It took a year to suppress the Pugthcu uprising. a ' ' Ciar Nicholas ha lost a great deal of ground by reason of his dilatory pol icy. The roinut he announoea hi wil lingness to yield to one demand of hi terrified subject they seem to be ready with somthing else a little more radical to insist upon. 0 A Philadlphia paper that was on tlie losing side in the recent campaign is convinced that "It i always best to give people what they want without unneces sary delay." o it is hinted that llreat Britain and lapau will start a rival to the Panama canal, uiug the Nicaragua plan as a lm-is. Senator Morgan will soon be strutting around with a vindication chip on his shoulder. New Yorker believe in state improve ments. Some time ago they voted f 101,- 000,000 to deepen the. Km canal, and at the recent election approved the issue of fiO.OUO.OUO stato bonds to be spent in road building. 0 - A right reverend bishop declares flat houses inimical to married life, but of course the head of the family may, if he wishes, insist on bringing up the coal himelfaas a matter of principle. REiORT OF THE CONDITION Ot THE irst F National Bank It would be a joke if the Panama ca nal should be finished before those en gineering experts agree on the plan, hut there does not seem to 1 much sense of humor down on the isthmus. 0 Kus-ia may be aggrieved at having twenty-four hour without a revolution, but thoe St Petersburg correspondents are entitled to a day off after a good week's work. 0 It is reported that in sixty-eight coun ties of Kentucky no whiskey is sold. That i a terrible responsibility to throw upon the other fifty-one counties. 0 The Russian proletariat have again called off the strike, without prejudice to their favorite occupation of calling down Witte. Pears' Pears' Soap has never offered premiums to induce sales. It is, in itself, a prize for the complexion. Established In 17S. The Astoria Restaurant.
