It is estimated by local steamship men that the Xonie fleet Utit year car ried 43,000 ton of general merchan dise and 4.000.000 feet of lumber. The passenger travel was represented by 4300 ppersone and bullion shipment reached a total of $4,654,839.17. Divers who have been searching at San Francisco, for the remain of the Pacific mail steamship Kio de Janeiro, which was wrecked in the entrance to this harbor several years ago, announc ed yesterday the success of their quest It is asserted that there is no doubt of tha identity of the wreckage found. One diver had a- narrow escape from death during his exploration of the bottom of the Golden Gate. Freight Only. The Costa Rica, which replaced the St Paul on the Portland San Fran cisco nw, arrived Tuesday night in her new capacity of a purely freight car rier. With the charter of the Senatir by the Portland & San Francisco Steam ship Company, the Costa Rica is now relieved from passenger traffic, and the former vessel will alternate with the Columbia of the same company. Under this new arrangement the Costa Rica arrived with an entire new roster of officers and crew, wtih the exeeptioa cf Captain Kidston and the engineers, the remainder having been placed on the Senator. The Alliance and Whittier did not gut out yesterday. They both went to jthe bar, but the rough conditions there forbade their crocking out Captain J. J. Anderson, of the O. It. & X, steamer T. J. Potter is laying off I for a day or so at Portland, to welcome .& strange, little girl at hi home. He 'has five bovs, all thriving nicely, and concluded the young lady was entitled to the best reception possible. So he accorded her the fullest honors in hi power and at last reports the mother and baby were progressing finely. The German ship Adolf "and the Or man barkentine Mary Wiukleman are due down from Portland, outward bound. - The steamship Senator, from San Francisco, was sighted off the bar yes terday afternoon before the fog took possession of the coast. She will be in this mornig as early as may be. The Harvest Queen went up to Tort land yesterday afternoon, with the British ships Kynanee and Dunboyne on either bow. The coal laden, British ship BIythes wood was hauled into the Elmore coal dock yesterday afternoon', and will im mediately discharge 800 tons of hr cargo, before going on to Portland. They are both tine steamers snd are well handled and cared for. ' The Simpson fleet at Knappton is now represented by the Volunteer, En core, Alumni and Chun-hill; all loading outward cargoes. The Lurline made good time yester- dav. She left here for Portland at 1:20 a. m., and got back last night at 0:30 o'clock. The fog is the heaviest and most pen etrating of the season. It involves the whole coast from San Piego to Victoria, and goes a hundred miles inland. The steamship Olympi was to have left Portland yesterday afternoon, for this wort, San Francisco and lx An geles. If she ditl, the fog ha prob ably put her t anchor somewhere and she will be at the Callender pier some time todav. The fog disarranges all sclu'dule. for river, bay, bar and sea. The steamer Graf Walderxce had a second accident yesterday, at Now York which will delav her departure until tonight. While moving out from the wharf a rope became entangled in the propeller, and the big liner, laden with many passengers, had to be towed back to her dock. The Britih steamer Bavaria, bounl from Barry to Bordeaux, has been lost off Belle Isle, France. Part of her crew has been landed at Xoir Moutier, France The captain and fourteen men are missing. The Navy Department has been in formed that the charge for passage through the Sum canal of the floating drydock built for the Philippines will be alwut $20,000 or to give favorable con sideration to the Sues route, and, in fact, all preparations contemplate that route. ENGINEERS DEBATE ON CANAL. Washington, Nov. 15. The full Board of Consulting Kngineera of the Panama canal, had an all day'a session today, snd continued the debate on the differ ent type of canals. The result was the impression that a large number of engineera are at present in favor of a sea level canal, but the intimation has been given, Umt there might be a com promise on the low level Jock canal, which will be very satisfactory to the commission and the administration.
