We are preparing a pig of steel from the first run ever made from Co lumbia river Band, which will be tent to you as an exhibit from your sand to be kept by the Chamber of Com merce, "For use; in our electric snvlter 1 think it would be well to have about five carloads more of the sand front Hammond station taken from the sur ; face directly downward. In cluded in the report were figures in de tail, showing the difference in the sands gatht-red and tested, and the quan tity of the various kinds of metal which they contained. The report was addressed to the Hon orable Charles D. Waleott, director :f the United State Geological Sur.e.", and will later be sent to Washington. It was sent by Dr. Day, to Secretary Biggins of the Chamber of Comment, . and accompanying it was a letter, in which he said: "I have pleasure in mailing you herewith in' addition to the first rough preliminary report sent to you in regard to the Columbia river aaad4 ' the enclosed manuscript draft of the more complete preliminary re port, on which I have been engaged for the last few weeks, and the results of whioh have just been computed. "I have also pleasure in sending you a ample of the magnetic iron ore, tircon, monazite, ilmenite, olivine, quartz, and a sample of mixed minerals obtanied from Columbia river sands, a well as a small button of gold, containing also platinum, obtained from your sand, with the hope that this button of gold the . Dr. Day's letter and report were call ed forth by the request of the local Chamber of Commerce some time spo, to test a quantity of the sand to bo found on ClaUop beach. It is on these sands that the report is made. He now suggests that another kit'h of sands be forwarded, and th'-t will 1 at once done. To this end,' a committee consisting of II. G. Van Duen, C. R Bigsins and Dr. J. A. Fulton, were p pointed to raise the necessary f.iml and another committee coikWliii2 of John IL Smith, C. F. Lester and P. Taylor was appointed to gather tie sands. The cost is estimated at about $lbO.' The chamber was crowded with visitors last evening and much enthusiasm was manifested. It was reported yesterday tint a stock company, will be incorporated at Chinook, where the sands are also very rich, for the purpose of clipping and operating a smelter. The principal cot in the reduction of the ore is iu the operation of tlie smelt er, and by many tie belief is held that the recent discoveries of natural gas, will prove very useful along this line. Kven though the smelter should 1 lo cated some distance rom the place where the crude material is found, this would be quit immaterial, when the low cost of production is considered. Te-4 were made from aml taken from eight different locations along the beach, as follows: From Moore's Hotel, Seaside; from Oca 1 hart Park Peach; from West Stations from Carnahan'e Station; from Warn-nton Station: from Hammond Station, 130 feet North of Railroad Station; from Hammond Sta tion 1500 feet Wet of Railroad Station at High Water mark, and from Hot torn of Columbia River at Pillar Rock. In the report, sands from each of these eijjt locations is taken tip sepa rately, and the different metal contain ed in each is shown. It is printed in full below. The figures represent the numlter of pound per ton of sand ex cept in the case of gold and platinum, where the figure denote the value in cents per ton. From Moore's Hotel, Seaside. Among other things Senator Fulton said: "Yes, I will leave next Sunday even ing for Portland where I shall remain two days, starting for Washington on the morning of Wednesday the 15th in stant I have much to do in the wsy of preparing matters to lie brought to the attention of Congress this w inter and the work is largely of such a character that I can do it more advantugcoitsly in Washington." iu you expect to secure any appro pi latum for Oregon rivers and har Mra at the coming session?" asked the reporter. "Have you anything to say concern ing the city election that is to occur next monthi" wss the next question propounded by the inquisitive reporter. "WWI," said Mr. Fulton, "I have only this to say; I have not lost interest in local matters pertaining to Astoria and Clatsop County. I .hope to see the Re publicans name a good rlty ticket and elect it This is a Republican city and should have a Republican Government. It is a serious mistake to aasume that it U immaterial what the political com plexion of local officials is. Success in local elections is very important and almost! a pre requisite to snores inj state elections. No party can maintain su organization tfiat Ignores or under- estimates the importance of success in local elections and organization is neces sary to success. Rut there Is, to my mind, a fsr greater reason wby the Re publicans should make an earnest and united effort for success at the coming city elctioo. Publio gambling rooms snd dam halls have been closed in Astoria by Republican officials. I ap prove aimolutHy that step. They should be kept closed. No backward step should I taken, no retreat should be sounded in a matter of suh irrsvs Importance to the good name and the moral atmosphere of our city. It should be well understood that a defeat of the Republican ticket will be aecented as condemning Uia action of closing such institutions. This movement against public gambling snd dance halls is no crusade against the regularly licensed saloon nor is there any deposition to nterfere with tli m. It Is simply a de mand that the laws shall I enforced and that tin- foul dens shall lie ob literated from our miiUt. It is a de mand that thesi- snare net to entrap the yoiit,'. of our city, to deprive the family of the earnings of the husband and father shall he wiped out and not p-rmittcd to le m-l up again. For this, it seems to me, every right thinking itiwu will stand. For this every re-jH-ctable sul.Niii ninn (and there are oiuny) sin. old hUnd.. We must dovl some plan to cure that ami I am willing to assist ny practical movement to secure one. Another matter that should b.' UWn up at oiu-o is t!,e completion of the new court house. H occurs to me that there should )m no troubfe In getting twenty or moiv of our principal busi neM men to associate themselves to gWier f.r that purpose. Our banks have plenty of money Wid will doubt less advance surfieint, aay $75,000 to complete the buililing. Let the county convey the court hoiiso block to the ls-nty or more citizens.. who supply the money or to some company they shall. Jorm, and Uke an option to re-purcha-e on payimmt of the advances ami interest. The County can pay an annual rental suflicicnt to defray tlie lmVws and relm- the princlisd so that within five years it will own the building. I would gladly ait in any snoh undertaking. If wni such itepi is not taken the unsightly condition of the court house block will continue to disgrace the city and the county will suftVr the loss of the large sum already invested In the foundation for the new building.
