A special dirutch to Uie Fost-lntellijjcneer from Nome Mates that the whaling ftceat I frozen in, near Uie mouth of the Mackenzie river. Of the twelve vessels only about four are provisioned- for the winter. The others had intended to return to San Francisco. Tho Arctic, however, was rilled with ice all summer and when the whaler reached the Mackenzie the pack hardened. A. J. Stone who spent the winter of 197-98 in the vicinity of the Macken zie, gathered specimines of mammals for the zoological society of New York. stated that there was no danger of the whalers starving.
