ROMANOFF DYNASTY Its Rise, Autocratic Career, and Present Peril RULES RUSSIA FOR 392 YEARS President Nicholas II it the Eighteenth In Line Four Rulert Die at Hands of Astatine Romanoffs Have Fought Wart With Many of European Nations' The Romanoff dynasty ha ruled Ru ia for 392 years or through nearly four whole eenturiea, marked by blood sited, massacre, assassination, intrigue, connpiraey and war. In Uiose four centuries the Roman off fought wars with nearly every peo ple in Europe. They fought Sweden, subdued Poland, subjugated tbe Crimean provinces, overran Livonia, dismembered Poland and aent their Cossacks like a scourge across the Caucasus, until they had eouquered the center of Asia a far at the tomb of Tameraine, and added all of Siberia to the realms of the Czar. In those four centuries the Romanoff fought wart with Sweeden, Kngland, France, Italy, Prussia, Austria, Hungary, Turkey, China and Japan. They fought with and against Napoleon. They helped Prussia againt France, and in turn joined France in crushing Prussia. Three times they tried to comjuer Tur key. Twice they tried to invade Persia. Their hand have been against almost ewrv nation and ruler and people in Europe. They have been better hated and better feared than the members of any reignii.g family that ever held a throne in modem Europe. And yet these iiie RoinunotTs, whose throne has been washed with the blood of a million murdered subjects until its steps were as crimson as the velvet can poy above it, found Russia a horde of half Oriental barbarians and molded the squat, stupid mass into a modern nation one of the recognized powers of the world. They developed commerce, es tablished universities, grid ironed : the empire with railroad', fostered religion, cultivated art and licence. . Their ships ply every teg. Their railroads crosi two continents. They art rivals with Eng land and the United States in many linet of commerce. Their lawyer are recognized in the international courts of the world, their scientists are quoted in every laboratory, their literature is in every modern library and their music is recognized among tbe classics. The first Romanoff was Michael Fco- dorovitz, who ascended the throne in 1613 after the assassination of Feodor I., last of the house of Rurik, who had ruled for 7(K) years, lie crushed a re bellion and ruled until IM't in compara- ive peace. He was sin-ceded by his son, Alexis IV., who, in bis turn, crush ed a rebellion by hanging, burning and torturing 7,u(iO prisoners. Then came the son of Alexis, Feodor III., who ruled from ltSTfl to 1082. He left two on, Ivan V. nnd Peter, half- irothers. They ruled jointly, the real empress lieing Sophia, mother of Peter Sophia gave Russia the bloodiest reign history hud ever known of np to that time. It nil ended in l'i'"', when van V. died. Then Peter I. ii-sertvd himself and put hi mother in a convent. The history of modern Russia really lutes from the reign of IVter I., for he was the mo-t famous monarch of all Russia Peter the Oent. He sinuliz- ed his entry into power by beheading ".fMH) of his enemies. He was a won- lerful, tintetiitisiiiif, broad-minded. rtiel, hliMNlthirsty monarch, who hang d. Iniriied, tortured and drowned his subjects until all Russia was one vast orgy of blood. And yet Peter tlie (ireut built St. Petersburg, establishing the commerce of Rus-iii, introduced modern culture, and died after poisoning his own son. Catherine I., wife of Peter the Creat, succeed! him in 1723. She was famons as she was infamous. She was suc ceeded by Peter II., and then by Anne, daughter of Ivan. Anne was the first ruler of Russia to banish prisoners to Siberia. She thus exiled 40.000 of her subject and sent 10,000 more to the scaffold. Anne was followed by Ivan VI who was exiled and then assassinated. A coup d'etat called Elizabeth, daugh ter of Peter the Creat, to the throne in 1741, and she reigned through twenty years of intrigue and assassination. Pter 1U. mounted the throne fo,1762 only to 1 murdered by his wife's fath er a few months later. Then his wife, Catherine II., grasped the sceptre and ruled a dissolute empress, until 1796. Her son Paul succeeded Iter and in 1801 he was assassinated. Then came Alexander I., tbe emperor who burned Moscow to prevent its cap ture by Napoleon, and who afterward marched his army to the gates of Pari, compelled Napoleon to ahdide and sent him an exile to Kits. Nicholas II. came to tbe throne in IH.VJ. He wws the most enblnned ruler of tlu Romanoff dynasty. He liberated the serfs, and is remembered a the Czar wlto cnt a fleet to New York during the Civil War to ehec England's threatv of recognixing the Confederacy. He was almited in IH8I, just as he was about to grant Rush! a constitution. Alexander 111. ruled from HS1 until St4 as a reactionary. He was sue ceeded III 1SI4 bv the present t'zar Nicholas U. Members of Astoria Lodge No. 1., I'ni form Rank K. of P., were banquetted in the Oddfellow hall last evening, by Court No. 8 Foresters of America. Both lodges met in regular session early in the evening, and at the conclusion the Knights adjourned on special Invitation to Oddfellow bull, where the Foresters and a lavish spread were awaiting them. The affair was entirely Informal, but this did not detract from the pleasure of the evening in any way. Numerous toasts were responded to, and it was a late hour before the assemblage dis persed. STEAL MONEY AND WHISKEY. Thieves broke into Tom Eriekson't saloon at Chinook, last Saturday night and stole $35 in money and ten bot tles of whiskey. An entrance was ef fected by prying open a rear window of tbe saloon. A party of soldiers from Fort Columbia were in town late that night and suspicion points to them. MISSIONARY RALLY. A missionary rally will lie held to night nt the First Congregational Church to which everyone i cordially invited. Rev. C. F. Clapp and Rev Dora. Barber will be present to address the meeting. ARTIST'S GOOD WORK. R. V, Benson has pretty nearly achieved fame by his latest pen sketch, a living likeness of Colonel Judson Cole in a characteristic, attitude. The colonel himself commends the work of genuine realistic art, and upon receipt of this criticism Mr. Benson immediately passed the portrait up to Dell Scully, who promptly loaned it to Frank Woodfleld who will pass the good thing along in shape of the very latest post-cards. And thus does one spring from obscurity to the pinnacle of fame. Son Lott Mother. "Consumption runs In our family, ami through it I lost my mother," writes K. It. Reid, of Harmony, Me. "For the ....
