PREPARING FOR WAR
City Republican ' Central Com
mittee in Session.
3ACK NO MAN NOR MEASURE
rrty Candidates Must Initiate Their
Candidacies Party Behind Them in
the Line-op and a Fight to the
Finish.
The city republican central commit
tee met in called session at 8 oVkvk
last evening at the office of the secre
tury, Charles II. Abcrcrombie, the full
membership of nine, three from each of
the three ward, being in attendance.
The meeting was called for the pur
pose of taking a horoseopic view of the
pending political situstion and reaching
an understanding on preliminaries that
would be useful when the campaign,
should develop.
It was the concensus of opinion that
the committee, as such, should take no
hand in the retting up of a party candi
date for any office to lie filled; that
every man who desired to run should
be left free to initiate his own candi
dacy, secure signatures to his own pe
tition and attend to its filing all of his
own volition, thus, in all things, respect
ing the operation of the direct primary
law and having it absolutely free from
interference by the committee, in it
first and last elements.
The one decision affecting candidacy
taken by the committee was the unani
mous determination to put three men in
the field a candidates for the three
police commissioncndiips and insist, to
the point of invoking the law. upon Ihe
party's oanddntes in this relation Is-ing
placed upon the ballots, at the primary
and the general election. This is un
equivocal and will be maiitnine.1 to the
last ditch. There need be no mi-apprehension
alout it in any quarter.
No man's name was mentioned in re
gard to any office and no man will en
ter the primary race with any assur
ance or endorsement from the commit
tee, as such, behind him, save the one
certain confidence that is his by right
of affiliation, that if he emerges from
the primaries as the party candidate
for any office, committee and party will
be squarely at his back until be is in
vested with his official franchise.
When the primaries shall have closed
and the party's candidates are known,
all proper steps will be taken, prompt
ly and thoroughly to ensure the success
of the ticket and the tactic employed
will include no scheme of toleration or
negotiation, but will mean clean, hard,
honest fight, win or lose, to the last mo
ment of tli" campaign.
Thi is the last meeting of the pres
ent committee as it is constitute,!. The
new committee nnint lie named and or
panized under the direct primary rule.

LAUNCH BETTY ABALZE
Catches Fire While Towinf Near
Smith's Point.
While towing a fish-receiving scow
near Smith's Toint, the launch Betty,
tender for the Undenberger Cold Stor
age Company, caught fire yesterday af
ternoon about 5 o'clock. The flames
broke out on the after deck, and when
discovered by the crew, had made con
siderable headway. Water was quickly
bailed aboard, ehowever, and the flames
were soon under control. The damage
will not exceed $200.
How the fire, originated is a mystery,
and the crew can give no satisfactory
account of the affair. Captain Painter
was in the pilot house and the flames
crept well up to it liefore he noticed
that the boat was afire. Stopping his
engines, he and his crew quickly com
menced to drench the deck, nnd the
blaze was soon extincuii.hed.
The fire was seen by residents in the
vicinity, and news reached the city that
the Iniat was a total loss. This report
reached Robert Undenberger, and he
itiicklv went to the s.vne of the dis
aster in a launch. Ife found the tire
evtinguished. and the damage only nom
inal.

TRIES TO STRAIGHTEN HA1
NVotaska Woman Dons Male Garb to
Aid Her in Securing Work, But She
Could Not Forget Characteristics of
the Ses and a Policeman Took Her in
Chicago, Oct. 20. Attired in maseti
line garb, Augusta llelvey, a young
married woman, sought work for four
days in the down town district, ming
ling with scores of rival male appli
cants and passing iinohecrvcd in the
throngs on the main street. Today she
would have begun work as a male wait
er in a down town restaurant had not
an observant oliccman noted a char
acteristically feminine move and man
ner in the youth. The policeman took
the "suspect" to the police station
where the young woman admitted her
disguise and declared she had asuum
ed the garh solely in order to secure
employmen in which living wages could
be obtained.
In St. Imis, she said she had worked
as a waitress and had been able to bare
ly earn a scant living while her cloth
ing bad len worn to slircds. I'tmhle
to replenish it she had taken from a
trunk a suit of clothing oin-e worn by
her husband find had determined that
henceforth she would ps as a man
and endeavor to cum the wages given
the male worker.
The woman is 2i5 years old and re
ides in Fuirbiiry, Nebraska. A speed
ily driven aut'iinohilc was the nui-e of
the failure of Miss llrlvey's plans. A
it flashed by a down towu corner a po
liceman leaned forward l catch the
number.
The wniiian, in co.it and trousers. wa
ill its path. She shrieked ns he leap
ed aside into 11 mud puddle and mioie
a motion as if to gather up her flowing
skirts. Then the youth moved a hand
to his bat as if to adjust it.
The patrolman waited no longer. He
hnd missed the numlier of the automo
bile, but he took the "boy" to the sta
tion.
