Rydquist of the Firat Lutheran Church Speaks to a Large Audience on Israelites and Pastor of Presbyterian Church Deala With "Doubters." Regular servieee were held in all the Atoria churchea yesterday. Below will be found brief excerpts from aermons preachel in tha Presbyterian and Luth eran churchea: Lotberaa Church. Rev. Rydquist of tha First Lutheran church spoke to a large audience on the subject "All are not Israelitea that are of Irsael" He said in part:: Israel of old en joyed for a time tie special privilege of being ruled directly by Javeh. At the oracles of Urim and Thuinmim he ho eooke to them, and through the a - mouths of holy prophet, seera and po eU He made hi will known to tha peo ple. They were God's chosen people as SL Tsui says in our text: "To whom pertaineth the adoption and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law. and the service of God, and the promises." In the undulating progress of people and nations there is a climax tower ing above all other heights of develop ment, but the lower is the valley be neath. Israel was high in greatne and ulorv at the time of Solomon, their king, and humiliating was the valley of strife and wars which followed. But greater was their glory when the king of kings, their promised Messiah, came as the saviour and redeemer, and deep . a J er, more nunmiaung ana despairing as the valley below. Our thoughts ander back to the awuful doom of their capital city, of the depression an J shame of a once great and happy peo ple. With the exception of a few, they seem to be rejected by God, without country, without a Messiah, without king. To be a true Israelite in the olJeu lay it was not enough to be a de-teen- ent of Abraham and received into the enant, but to live according to that enant. The Jews rejected the Messiah and re fused to recognize in him the fulfilment the promise for the following reasons: was borne of humble parentage. hile they expected their Messiah and iverer to come from among princes leaders of the people. He gave a more spiritual interpretation of the law hereby he pot Pharisees and scribes shame; he did not recognize the old traditions of the Talmud as equivalent the sacred writings of scripture; and e all because he did not organize people and deliver them from the er of Rome as they expected their Messiah to do, establish a free govern ment, and inaugurate a glorious reign. worldly kingdom, worldwide in its .... .!., er and influences was meir weal. The Mesniah which they rejected has published a kingdom worldwide in its fluenre, power, and extant. The Israel of old is not with the spiritual Israel f this new covenant, they are without this mighty kingdom and the blessed reign of the King of Glory. We look upon them today with grati- tide and hope. They shall yet see 111 Him whom thev have pierced their Mes- i:ih. But of the spiritual Israel it can also W said "All are not true Israelites who are of Israel." The churches of today, though they all may bear the name' of Christian are not all tru to the cause of Christ. 1 am not here to accuse and judge any church or church party, but observing through the press the ser mons so called and the. subjects treated in some of the pulpits of our country, this pulpit which should stand in any Christian church as a symbol of the gospel message, and from which this mesage should be proclaimed in all its power and purity has become a lecture platform of politics, moral philosophy and the like. We may accuse the world of being evil, of being unchurchly, and lament over the fact that a small per centage of our population being church members. But let the churchea go back to the gospel, and the world shall be won for Christ. cov cov of He deli and to to abov his pow powt in companion and colaborers of Thomas for three years reported to him that .lesus had risen and they had seen him and talked with him. Thomas replied: "Kxccpt I shell see in his hands t"ne print of the nails and put my linger into the print of the nails and thrust my hand into hi sida I, will not believe. There are two kinds of doubt. The honest doubt that put a fair mind on inquiry after truth. The persistent doubt is the result of an alnoimal mind. Some people doubt everything and everybody all the time. Such people are usually melancholy. They rail for more evidence and never get aulticient to remove the doubt. What constitutes demonstration to one mind may hope lely perturb another mind. Tha per sistent doubter leads a forlorn life Doubt is mental dynamite. It destroys all fortifications. It annihilates all that is worth possessing and enjoying in lift. The parent who doubts his child's love is most miserable. The husband who doubts his domestic happiness. The man who doubts the sincerity of his friends makts sthipwreck of tha pleasantes bonds of life. The merchant who doubts the bank cannot succeed in business, Tha citizen who doubts the triumph of right in governmental relations cannot rise high in patriotism. When one finds in himself a tendency to chronic doubt, he should at once pay attention to the laws of health for it is a symptom of a diseased mind and if not corrected will bankrupt all the mental and spiritual forces. Such people drift into unfathom able pessimism. They doubt every bodv and God and their own mission and ruav harvest all human hopes in sui ft cidal mania. To him who doubts, there is despair, miserv. hopelessness, the crave and dreaded thing to come. Thomas got his physical demontra tion of the resurrection The senses of sight, hearing and touch were adminit ered too. but he misused the Ird's bles sing. Christianity stands for more than demonstrating the claims. It has bles ingt to confer incomparably richer than scientific demonstrations.
