Julius Strauss Tells Story of St
Paul's Wreck.

Julius Strauss, an Astorian who was
a passenger on the wrecked steamer St.
Paul, arrived on the A. & C train yes
terday morning. Other Astorian who
were on the unfortunate vessel, returned
on the steamer Alliance Tuesday, but
Mr. Strauss declined to travel on Mon
day, the Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur,
which account for his tardy arrival.
The story Mr. Strauss tells of the
wreck is significant, in as much a he
insists that the night, instead of being
fWTy ne of beautiful starlight.
Mr. Strauss plainly shows the effect
of his strenuous experience. One of his
old friend lat night declared that he
had apparently aged 10 years.

CHINOOKS COME IN RIVER.
For the first time in many years, a
quantity of good grade Royal Chinook
salmon are coming Into the river, in the
regular fall run. A a rule the later
run consist almost entirely of Silver
Mte and other inferior fish, but this
year, many of the up-river gillnetter
have been making daily substantial
