Ben Wise left for Portland on a bust
ness trip Wednesday. He will select
a full line of fall and winter goods be
fore returning.
Dr. Klarake left for Port Townsend
Wednesday, on the Saheotta, where he
will associate himself with an okl es
tablidied physician in the practice of
medicine. Dr. Klaiuk'e gave up a prac
tice in Ilwaco last spring to accept a
commission in the Russian hospital at
the seat of war, and since bis return to
the states has been unengaged.
W. B. Donaldson, the Chinook trapper,
was in Astoria Tuesday and Wednea
day.
Ben Carrington, of Astoria, the lower
river agent of the J. M. Arthur Co, of
Portland, is in eastern Oregon on a leave
of absence. He will be away for two
or three weeks.
The government engineers are engaged
in making a survey of the Ilwaco har
bor, in accordance with a bill passed at
the last session of congress. As soon
as this survey is completed, plans and
specifications for the dredging of the
channel, will be compiled and forwarded
to Washington by the engineering de
partment, together with an estimate of
the cost These plans will then be
submitted to congress, and an effort
made to secure the appropriation nec
essary for the work. Some time ago
Major Lang&tt estimated the cost at
$15,000. Should the dredging be ac
complished, it would have the effect of
eliminating the maintaining of steam
boat schedules between Astoria and Il
waco and North Beach, in strict accord
ance with the tides. As soon as the
survey of the Ilwaco harbor and chan
nel is completed, a survey of the As
toria harbor will be made.
Charley Snook, who clerks in the Col
lings grocery btore, is taking in the fair
this week.
There is a rumor current to the effect
that a huge wing dam will be construct-
led in a northeasterly direction, from the
head of Sand Island, with a view of
sheering a curent through Bakers' Bay,
and thus deepening the channel. It is
imposible to confirm this rumor, but it
is declared to emanate from reliable re
sources. It is declared that the engin
eer are more favorable to this project
than to the dredging of the channel. It
is believed that the present survey of
the channel may hare particular signifi
cance in this connection.
Jack Johnson of Astoria is suffering
from an attack of rheumatism, and has
been unable to attend to his duties in
the Bureau saloon.
Captain E. L. Lowe of Astoria has'
the upper work of the new launch which
he constructed in Ilwaco last summer
nearly completed, and she will soon be
placed in operation. Measurements have
been taken by the customs officials, and
she will be well under the fifteen ton
limit, necessary to the dispensing of a
licensed crew. Captain Lowe is unde
cided as to what line of work the boat
will be engaged in, but for a portion of
the time will probably be engaged in
towing for the Ilwaco Mill and Lumber
company.
Nearly six years ago a meeting of the
tockholders of the Ilwaco Railway &
Navigation company, was called for the
purpose of considering the proposition
to mortgage the road, and while it is
generally supposed that the money to
be thus made available, was for an ex
tension of the line from Ilwaco to Knap
pton, yet no official confirmation of this
has bpen obtainable. A significant fea
ture in the situation, is the fact that
this meeting has never been held, but,
on the other hand has been postponed
from week to week. By many, this Is
taken to mean that negotiations at the
Portland end are in progress, and that
.... . i
once all is in reauiness, me general
meeting will be held, the mortgage ne
gotiated, the funds thus made avail
able and the construction of the road
ordered. It is also contended that the
Harriman interests thus kept a loop
open by which they could commence the
construction of a line up the north
bank from Ilwaco, on short notice,
should the Hill lines threaten to invade
the field.

the Jansen estate, and the alleged mis
appropriation of the funds, in Portland,
ha given credence to the belief that he
will not appear. Jansen, it will be re

dent, and his brother, who is illiterate,
came west "from Wisconsin to settle the
estate. A judgment of about 12500 was
secured against the car company, but
the great majority of this was eaten up
with lawyer' fee. Of the amount Ruf
fin received $700, but it is alleged that
in order to secure the signature of the
dead man's brother to the contract, that
he represented to him, that he was sign
ins a receipt for a small amount of
money. District Attorney John Man
ning ha been considering filing an in
formation against Ruffin for obtaining
money under false pretenses, but Ruffin
is alleged to be in California, and it is
not thought likely that he will re ap
pear. Ruffin has a number of cases be
fore the Pacific county superior court,
which is demanding his attention, among
them an attachment brought by Van
Schuyver & Co., on Jack Wilson's livery
barn, for the collection of an old liquor
bit). This case is set for the coming
term of court.

From an unreliable source a rumor
has been sprung, to the effect that Gen
eral Manager O'Brien during his recent
visit to Ilwaco, made arangements for
the taking over by the company of Pa
cific park. An investigation ha been
made, and it has been learned that the
story is an umiualified falsehood with
out the least foundation in fact.

1 Ew fa hile i;
We sincerely regret that we were compelled to close our doora, from time-
to time during the day on account of the heavy crowd that packed our- floor space to its
limit. It really was more than, we anticipated for the first day. However, there arc
nine more days in which every resident within oue hundred miles f rom Astoria will
have ample time to call once more. We will be prepared, no matter how large the
crowds, to handle the masses. An extra additional force of efficient and sufficient force
will be here to wait on yoiu We not only owe. an apology to the people but we thani the
many thousands who attended our opening day We owe our thanks to the entir com
munity for its good judgment in availing themselves of the many bargains offered.
When we say that we sell as we advertise, we do it, for our reputation is at stake, and
our immense capital involved in our establishment, will not allow us to do otherwise
We will expect in the remaining nine days to see every man, woman and child attend
this sale and that a new record will lie established in Astoria commercial annals long to
be remembered by the buying public r &J Ji jit s ' J j' j& v
