Consul Dun' nine, of Milan, has received numerous communications from the United State in regard to a reported cure for tuber eulosia discovered by Professor Levi- of Milan, and writes as follows regarding the matter. A great deal of interest having been groused throughout the world by the re Dort that Professor Levi, of Milan s Italy, has perfected a cure for tubercu losis in both animal and human, believe it proper to make a statement in order that the hopes of those suffer inir with consumption, and their friend mav not be too greatly aroused or too positively gratified by the belief that thev are about to receive a sure and lasting cure. In the last few week I have received countless letters from America asking for further information of Professor Levi's investigations, based on newspaper reports printed in the United States, and on indefinite hints sent bv consuls in other countries, who Ittvsl heard indirectly of the experi ments eoinir on here. All my corre spondents evidently believe the long wished for remedy has been found. The fact seems to be, that Professor Tvi. whom I believe to be a careful and conservative scientist, has been ex nerimentinz for a more or less extended period with iodine, following and ex tondinff certain lines of study which for many vears have engaged the at tention of Italian men of medicine. For a long time it has been a common belief amone a srroup of the most advanced Italian scientl-ts, that iodine, properly transformed, could be used successfully to attack tuberculosis in men and ani mals. The difficulty ha been in the process of transformation by which the iodine U rendered suitable for injection or inoculation. Professor Levi's exper iments have dealt solely with this pro cess and his "secret" lies in the charac- acter of the treatment which he applies to the drug. He believe he has dis covered the right mixture. Whether or not he has done so, remains to be seen, both by himself an the public. Only long and exqui-itely cautions ex periments can give the proofs, which medical science will rigidly exact, and which Professor Le"vi himself insists on obtaining before he makes any fur ther statement regarding his work. He will not undertake to create among suf ferers with tuberculosis hopes which his later labors may show to have been in vain, and he declines to endanger his own reputation by claiming at this crit ical stage of his work results which the final tets may not wholly justify. Meantime, Professor Levi is working teadily toward the ultimate trials of his discovery, and promise to give the world the result of his laliors at the earliest possible time. He has apprised the king of Italy of his intentions and has received the encouragement of the court. Continental physicians are gen erally awaiting his formal announce ments. At the moment this is made I shall communicate with the Department of State and until that time, I advise Americans who for any reasons are in- tere'ted in the"cure" to join with Prof essor Levi himself in hoping for the bet, without placing too much faith on what is at present an uncertain out- NEVCHINESETREATY Japan Concludes Secret Treaty Mith Celestial Empire.
