At the Salmon river hat4'hery we are alsiut tlirnug'.i vith our work on the spiing ulmoii. The result of the work so far show that from -ToJ salmon 1, I.VMMAI egg were sM(ire.. Of these eggs, we have let the I-wis and Clurk comiiiiiou have (iU.iaMl, JUe first eggs were taken July In another few ucck the Augu-t and fall salmon will U- enteiing thi river, and wc should get another million or two egg from this variety of salmon; and ft ill later on, a million or two of the nilvcrside variety. At the McKcnie river station we be gan taking egg August 1.1, and to the present time have secured 240.iMa), with the pro-H'ct good for full supply. At this station we will work on nothing this year but the spring salmon. KeMiit received from Ontario are to the cllcd that salmon are now showing up much la-ttcr in Snake river, and if they me imt fUhcd too hard by the Idaho and Washington fishermen on the lower Snake river we should do fairly we thi year. The water in the river i one and one half feet lower than ever la-fore, and dm- not offer much of an inducement for salmon to ascend the stream, but indication are to toe effect that it will soon Ik- raising, which should favor our work. At the Wallowa station, the indica tions Are not very favorable. Superin tendent Allen seems to think that most of the salmon in the Wallowa river lie- low- the station have lern dynamited thi year. The contractor constructing the new hatchery .building have been delayed somewhat on aci-otint of not la-ing able to get their lumber hauled, but the woik now i progressing fairly well. and it should lie finished within a few day of the time limit. Alsea River. I have been making an investigation thi month of Drift creek, one of the large tributaries of the Aiwa river, looking for a situation where we could stablish a sub-station to work in con nection with the Yaquina hatchery. Thi past eaon we divided tip the fry raised at the Yaipiina hatchery between the Yaiuina and the Alra, hauling 1,- 000,000 (lf the Chinook and 1,000,000 of the silverside fry over the mountain and lila-rated them into a tributary of said Drift creek. After thi, I want to transfer the egg when in the eyed state, which will lw much more aatis- factory, and am desirous of having a it nation on aid Drift creek where a few- hatching trough can lie act up and the fry raised ami turned out in the immediate vicinity. While wo get so little money from licenses for work on our coast stream I am disposed to fa vor this plan for the Alsea river, and feel confident that the work done in tui way will aist the river very material ly and at a nominal expense.
