STATEMENT OF ,
Astoria Savings
Bank
At the close of business August 10, 1903.
the statement issued by the New lork
Post Graduate hospital to the effect
that 11 patients hare been cured of
pulmonary tuberculosis and are fit sub
ects for life insurance riks immediately
demands attention. Our eyes are sore
from reading the thousands of glaring
announcements of quack physicians
and spurious patent nostrum manufac
turers who claim to have discovered
cures for the white plague, in contradic
tion to the world's most eminent nied
k-al practitioners that the disease is be
yond the control of normal medicinal
means, and it is, indeed, a relief to view
a statement emanating from such an
authoritative institution as the Xew York
Post Graduate hospital. Efforts to ar
rive at some means of limiting the rav
ages of consumption have been specially
noticeable of late years and we are not
altogether surprised to learn that a prac
tical method of curing the disease has
been conceived by properly accredited
medical authorities. Mortality, as
a result of tuberculosis, has been rep
resented in appalling figures. This dread
disease has devastated deeper than all
maladies known to modern medical
science and the pessimist have declared
not infrequently and not without
moderate degree of certainty, that tu
berculosis would prove ultimately the
extermination of the American race.
It is somewhat gratifying to feel there
is a possibility of consumption being at
least controlled, if not cured absolutely,
The remedy discovered by the Xew York
Post graduate hospital is composed of
the juice of raw vegetables potatoes.
lieets, cabbage, onions, celery and the
like, procured by grinding and squeezing;
the dose consisting of two ounces taken
after meals. Details of the conception
of this remedy or of the proportions in
which the different ingredients are used
are not given. The statement say fur
ther that the remedy may ultimately
render everyone immune from tubercle
baccili, just as vaccination safeguards
JiDin smallpox. It appears tlwt the
remedy employs, through a svstem of
non-epidcrm innoculation, all ani
mal life that exists in the vegetable mat'
ter to combat the tubercle baccili. In
other words the time tried maxim "it
takes a thief to catch a ehief" and its
transposition," it takes a bug to catch a
lug," now applied to floriculture ancnt
the crusade against the ravages of par
asites, may now I applied to medical
science In the further transposition, "ft
takes a bacterium to catch a bacterium."
Further research along these lines will
doubtless be followed with unusual in
terest and any papers that may be is
sued in the immediate future will be
eagerly read.
