William of San Francisco reg istered at the Occident yesterday. TUNNEL GIVES WAY. Lives of Workmen Jeopardised by Brsak in North River Tunnel. Xew York, Aug. 10. Under pressure of the weight of the North river, the roof of the northerly tulw of the twin tunnels being hired from Fifteenth street, Jersey City, to Morton street, Manhattan, partly gave way yestenlay and 22 men at work behind the boring shield narrowly escaped drowning. One man lost hi life, having been crushed by the shield, stunned and drowned. Nineteen of tlia workmen took fright when the water began to trickle down upon them aud lied toward the gate of the air lock. Thne retained their pres. ence of mind and plugged up the break in the roof. When they finished their work they were hip deep in the water. Work on the southern tube of the tunnel was finished last fall. The northern bore had lieen carried to with in 200 yard of the Sew York shore when yrstcrday's leak began. The three men who remained plugged the hole with bag Ailed with sawdust, which art al ways kept near the shield for that purpose. The pressure of compressed air was increased and it held the bag of sawdust agaiiot the ieiiing until planks and timber could l placed in position. NUT CROP IS SMALL. Ventura, Cal, Aug. 10 The English walnut crop of Oils county will tie but half, or at most, two third of that of last year, when ISO oarloaus were shipped.
