THE MORNING ASTORIA N, ASTOKU, OREGON. THURSDAY, JULY 17, 1903. RANCHES TO FARMS Providing Homes for Five Thous and Families. LAND SOLD AT VERY LOW KATE Six Million JUres of Land Demanded by the Farming Meeds of Texas to be Sold for Settlement Exit Cattle From Ranges. The placing on the market of 6.000,000 acres of land owned by the state of Texas, which ,will be done on Sept. 1 next, will cause the breaking up of many large cattle ranches in wet Texas, where the land that is to be sold is situated. At present and for years pat this land las been under lease by the state to cattlemen. It was not until late years that that portion of the state was thought to be adapted for fanning. The agricultural element kept going farther and farther wrest year by year, until they began encroaching the domain over which the cattlemen held undisputed away. Then came the contest for su premacy and the farmer won. The demand for additional land for home for these prospective new settlers became so great that the state resolved to abandon ita policy of leasing 6,000,000 acre of ita public domain and to give the people who want homes an opportu nity to obtain them at small cost. In most instances the cattlemen who have these lands leased for grazing purposes wb a few sections which form a nucleus for their great ranches With the abol ishment of the leases the cattlemen will be forced to take to stock farming upon their reduced holdings, or quit the country. Many of them announce that they will adopt the Mter course. Some First National Bank of Astoria, Ore. ESTABLISHED 188G. Capital and Surplus $100,000 J. Q. t. BOWLBY. president tt. 1 flTiRSCCf,. They are as neat as wax, are manned by Pullman conductors and porters and in addition to this, they are in charge of a Rock Island excursion manager. The Rock Island has three Eastern gateways Chicago, Kansas City and St. Louis. Direct connection in Union Stations at all three, for all important points in Eastern and.South'ern states. The area of the land which tjie state I to sell is some 9,400 miles. It is large than MasNH'husetts.'N'ew Hampshire or Delaware, and twice as Urge as Connet ioutt. This laud is to lie sold in lots of one, to eight sections each. No purchaser will be permitted to acquire mora than eight sections. It will provide home for about 3.000 families. Since the announcement wa made that this laikl is to be sold. State Com nussioner J. J. Terrell has received let ters from thousands of people in all parts of the country waking inquiry in regard to the matter. The fact that the land is to lie sold at a minimum price of $1 per acre, with 40 annual payments- at interest of only three percent, makes it an attractive proposition to many people who are seeking homes ill the west, a residence of three years upon the land is required of every purchaser to perfect his title to the property. The region where this land is said to have practically none of the features of the frontier as generally pictured by those who are unfamiliar with the Southwest. In point of salubrity of climate it is equal if not superior to any part of the United States. The alti tude is from 1.200 feet to 3.000 feet uch a thing as malaria is unknown. There is not an acre of this land that schools. Some of it is distant 50 to 100 miles from the nearest railroad point but the roads are good at all times of the year. On some of this land, pure, freestone water is obtainable at depths of 23 to 50 feet. After disposing of this 6,000,000 acres the state of Texas will own 12,000,0(10 acres of land which will continue to be leased to cattlemen until such time as the demand for its settlement shall ar rive. Not all of thce. however, were of the kind sought by the most exacting collector. So heay has been the demand, that the South wt ha been well nigh denuded of the fiipr lket. tot of the baket now oh tamable re made hurmily and to fullill ths demand made by collectors. The Indian do not upend the same amount of time upon them a when they made basket to lie handed dowTM heirloom. In some case it Ss not possible for them to llnil the durable graes which they once used, for civilization lis extin guished them. Some of the earlier baskets were the product of months of labor. Many of these cannot l bought for less tlum $23, and as high as (1,000 hat been paid for secimei4 The kind of Isisket that can be bought fot (I 30 or $2 is not the kind which the experienced collec tor will aceit. At present the trilea of Arizona make most of the basket. The Aloki, or 1 to pi, and the Apache make many baskets and plaque. The Pima, and Mareop.ts formerly made fine baskets, and some of the former do to day. The J'inu't learned the art from the Maricrs when the latter sought shelter taming from the slaughter of the Yuma, about one hundred years ago. The Maricopa have allowed their basket weaving to cease, while the Pimas are again tukin;; it up. The cheap modern basket have heavy fibres and coarse stitches or strands. The choicest basket and those sought by the connoisseur are delicately woxen with mellow- colored marking and Mi!t flexible strands. The latter an; so well put together that they will holi war. '"With the possible exception of Mon tana, Tonnpah," says J). G, Doubleday, of San Francisco, "which may breuk a little, I think the Nevada stocks are good buys to hold for the autumn ad- vam-e." The Poder Mining Co. has been incor porated in Albany, X. V., with a capital stock of IjvWuJW. The directors are: John J. Moylan, of Mexico City, Lewis Squires, of Plainfieid, X. The property destroyed was not of the char acter that cannot lie readily replaced and in another two rmnt!i there will be little or no traf of the conflagration. One of the most noteworthy strikes recorded in the Cneiir d'Ah-rie for sev eral months is reported in the disclosure of ore in the lowest working of the Mon arch mine, near Wallace, Idaho. Th ore was encountered at a !pth of 1,400 feet. The Butte copper district in June pro duced a total of 31.2!i0,0o0 pounds of 'sopper, an e.xces over the May produc tion of about 3.000.000 pounds. This is a new record for the Butte mines, every one of which was run to full capacity. The prade of ore shipped was of a fc'en erally higher value. The new Xorth Butte more than doubled its output. Bent Her Double. 3 "1 knew no one for four week when 1 wa sick with typhoid ana kidney troubles," write Mrs. Annie Hunter, of Pittsburg, Ta.
