In a small stream a mile from their Home on iniuyios is land, Ada Pearl and Elnora Payne, aged seventeen and fourteen, were drowned this afternoon. The girls were bathing in Gilbert creek nd ventured into deep water. Neither f the girls was able to swim very much, hough both tried to assist each other d shallow water. The excursion steamer Siiius waa deliberate)? run aground off North Brother island today to avoid a panic among her 1000 passen ger and the possible repetition of the Slocum disaster. The Sinus', while carrying a Sunday school picnic party, stove in her side on a rock near the very spot where the Slocum was burned lat year. Although Captain Pearce did not lie lieve the ship would sink, he ran her aground with all possible dispatch and landed his passengers with the aid of small boats. Topeka, Kas., July 21. The Topeka Pension Agency, which handles the bus iness of Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Indiana, aril Oklahoma Territory, has 15,180 pensioners on the rolls, a net loss of 252 for the year. The total gross loss was 5,031 of which 4,050 were due to deaths. The number of Spanish war veterans and of Civil War widows iwrenses but the rate of Civil War veterans is very high. Attorney Collins presented a lengthy argument against extradition to California on a perjJiry charge today. He held that Canada was beyond the scope of extradition by an act of ISSrt, and that perjury was not an extradit able offense Frank Biggins, counsel for the San Francisco police, called Col lins' attention to the terms of the Hay I'auncefote agreement which h claimed provided for extradition.
