Everyone thought a regatta ought to lie given, thl year especially, as there would Im thousand of people visit the coast all of whom would be at tracted to Astoria. After a thorough discussion a motion wa made and carried unanimously that Astoria hold a regatta. On motion the chairman was authorized to appoint a eommitU-e of 12 citiwns with full power to act and authority to appoint sub- committer. The chairman appointed the following: Herman Wie, C. R. The meet ing then adjourned and the committee on arrangement held a meeting and perfected a permanent orgnnitation. It wn decided to incorporate aa the A toria Regntta Company, and make the association a permanent institution. C R. Morse wa elected temporary chair man and J. S. Dellinger, secretary. The following permanent officer were elec ted: Chairman, Herman Wiacj secre tary, Fred Johnson; treasurer, .lbert Dunbar. It wo decided to divide the committee into a soliciting committee. They will start out thia morning to so licit fund. The committee estimated that $4,000 will be required. The fol lowing selections were mode: Groceries, hardware, restaurants, etc., Stokes, John son and Hauke; dry goods, millinery, et., Dunbar, Morse and Ryrie t saloons, Nelson and Staples; manufacturers and transportation companies, Dellinger and Snymouri Chinese," Mayor Surprenant and Charles Cammal. A dicnsion of the features of the regatta were Indulged in. While noth ing definite wa deci'tad upon, it waa the coneensua of opinion that the election of a queen to be eliminated and the com mittee select some one to act, and ap propriate not to exceed $100 for her robes. There will lie no aide shows nor fakirs permitted north of Commercial street. One of the features will be a ma rine parade on the river with a display of firework. The regatta will commence on Tuesday, August 29 and last three days. There will I no U Crosse or shell boat race, tinle the team desire to come at their own expense. It will be more of home affair and the prizes will be offered for fishing boat, tender boats, life saving service, sloop race, in fact, more like the first regatta given in Atorla which was the bet one ever given. Tbe river uport will take place in the forenoon and the land sport in tha afternoon, Kverything now depend how liberally the merchant and transportation com panic wilt be. CROP OUTLOOK GOOD. Farmers From Various Parts of County Speak Favorably of Outlook. Only a few farmers were in the eity yesterday, most of them being busily engaged in haying. All report the crop outlook in Clataop county as flattering. A large acreage hus been planted, es pecittlly to potatoes, onions, carrots, and other product which meet with a ready sale. The completion of several new county roads in the vicinity of Astoria has stimulated the farming industry and there are more inquiries for farms than ever before in be history of the county. ; What few farmers there are, are generally prosperous and would be much more, so if adequate roads were provided to get their produce to market from the remote sections. TILLAMOOK WINS SUIT. Demurrer Sustained By Judge Gilbert Water Works to Be Built Some time ago the City of Tillamook issued bonds and awarded a contract to build a new water system. The Tilla mook Water Comnanr had a franchise from the city, but it was alleged that they had failed to live up to the eon ditions of the franchise. The result wa that the company sued the city in the United States circuit court, the at torneys for the city filing a demurrer to the complaint. The demurrer was sus tained by Judge Gilbert, and the city will now go ahead with is new water svstem. The Shingle Business. The Howell shingle mill at Skamoka wa is running on full time and ship ping a large numlier of shingles to As toria every week from where they are shipped to San Francisco. A new boiler has been installed and a large Jorce of men have been employed to fill order. The Columbia Cedar Company also oper ate a large plant, most of the product being shipped to San Francisco. - Building New Residence. C. C. Maaden, the Svenson logger, ha awarded a contract to Ferguson 4 Hous ton to build a handsome i.ew residence for him in this city.
