To some person, unknown, is due the A t or inn's gratitude for a telephone message received yesterday, which indi rated that Astoria merchant content plated removing their advertisement from the paper in way of manifesting their disapproval of the Astorian'a policy n the Astor street brothel question. It vould seem that it vra this person' hope to frighten the Astorian into submission He ha not succeeded, nor ha he con vineed the Astorian that any such con certed effort, as he was wont to picture is on foot among the merchants of the city. The person, who ever he may I, and it is within reason to assume that he is of the Astor street element, is one of those poor, pity deserving outcast, who have neither the courage, nor the strength of conviction to support their information by purveying it in person, but in a way characteristic of them selves, resort to the telephone, hoping the advices they divulge may be suffi ciently startling to discomfit the recip ient and that they may attain their diabolical end wihout being forced to disclose their identity. Those who have followed the Astorian since the incep tion of the crusade against the Astor street dives, appreciate that the policy of the paper is well defined. The Astor ian is satisfied that it enjoys, not only the moral, but the monetary support of every man and woman who baa the in terests of the city at heart The As torian has entered this fight, not with the intention of aruosing a little senti ment of an ephemerial nature, but de termined to arouse substantial inter terest in this controversy among the self respecting residents of the city and to drive out these hovel which promulgate none, but retrogading influences. The Astorian does not pose as an oracle like its contemporaries, it is placed in a position which a transcription of Lincoln's immortal utterance fittingly describes: , "You can 'please' some of the people all of the time; you can 'please' all of the people some of the time, but you can not 'please' all the people, all the time." In the instance of "common de cency vs. moral depravity," the Astorian in advocating the former, is confident that it is pleasing "some of the peopl all of the time" and as the element to whom jhe policy of the paper does not appeal is entitled to neither respect nor consideration, the fight will cheer fully go no. 0 COMMENT MILLAR TO LECTURE ai m.Lf 11 . at i ai wcnncia jpnnu, n. Registration to I INDISCREET. A most deplorable phase accompany ing the prosecution of the Astor street brothel proprietors is that City At tor ney Smith has seen fit to appear in the defense of these men, who, rather should 1 favored with his contempt. While to be imbued with a desire to become a successful criminal lawyer is a most laudable ambition, and among the pro fession, for a lawyer to assume the de fense of a murderer is accepted with 1 degree of respect, for an attorney, ana especially one whose duty is to protect the interests of the city to which he is accredited, and TO ENFORCE THE LAWS, to allay himself with an ele inent that preys upon mind rather than upon life, is indiscreet in the ex treme. The Astorian hopes that Mr Mnitn may give this matter careful tudy, apppreciate the spirit which ac etates tins comment, and relinquish the defense he has so imprudently ac cepted. 0 MISCONCEPTION. The Astorian understands through the president of the Astoria Retail Liquor Dealer's that this body is tt, ixiycott the press of the city for the ftand it has taken in the matter of the dance-halls on Astor street. Such in telligence, is indeed of a very serious nature and will serve to give rise to vague apprehensions as to possible pre re among Astoria newspapers. Bo far as the Astorian may perceive, "Name Nation, State Kansas, but has no ax." appeared a head in the Oregon Daily Journal. The newspaper, appar ently has a "hammer." A Washington editor returning from an Eastern tour is quoted as saying, "the Lewis and Clark exposition i not advertised." Oh! Really t "A Rotten Failure," says a head in the Kansas City, Mo., Packer, probably in a coloquial strain and implying that the remuneration did not meet with the hope of those who planned fraud. From the new of the wreck of the "20th Century Limited" last night while running at a high rate of speed, it would appear that the comment in yesterdav' Astorian was rather pro poetic. "Ohio prison Filled with Swell Bank Looters," quotes a Syracuse (Y Y.; Telecram head. 'Swell Bank," with due respect to the idea of the Telegram's editor, characterize the status of the assett of a great many financial insti tutions in the country. Dawson City, Canada, will entertain visiting member of the American Insti- tute of Mining Engineers, with a game of base ball, commencing at "midnight sharp." The game will undoubtedly end in an "early morning" seance, held in one of Dawson's too numerous buffets. "Vets at Vancouver," says an Oregon ian head. We quite appreciate that lack of space and of a resourceful editor is responsible for the abbreviation, but even this is not a sufficient excuse for such a manifestation of disrespect to the men who fought for the preserva tion of the Union. WOMAN'S SYMPATHY. Is Proverbial Astoria Women 5o Ex ception. How much we owe to the sympathetic side of womankind. When others suf fer, they cheerfully lend a helping hand They tell you the means which brought relief to them that you may profit by their experience. Read the testimony given here by an Astoria woman: Mrs. Close, wife of John Close, night engineer at Lindenlmrger's cold storage house, foot of Eighth street, residing at 230 Commercial street, says: "About a year ago we moved here from Portland and as I had a great deal to do, I over did myself, and the result was I brought on kidney trouble. My back began to ache and as time rolled on it kept get ting worse instead of better. It finally grew so bad that I could scarcely stoop or straighten after stooping. When I Aid any work requiring bending I could hardly get up, and I had headaches, dizzy spells, and at times everything be fore me looked blurred. I was just about to start to the store for a plaster to put on my back when I red about Doan's Kidney Pills and as they were so highly recommended for kidney trouble made up my mind to try them and procured a box at Charles Rogers' drug store on Commercial street. They went right to the root of the disease and helped me from the start and before I had finished the box I was cured. Everything is changed with me now and I have no symptoms of kidney trouble whatever." for sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents Foster-Milburn Co., Buffalo, N. Y., sole agents for the United States. A lecture will be on Manila, to be given by Mr. William B. Millar, the Y. M. C. A. secretary who induced the Mikado of Japan to adopt the Y. M. C. A. methods for work among the Japanese troop. He ha just com back from a tour of the world.Another will be on New York city as a foreign mission field, to be given by Dr. Thorn as Darlington Health Commissioner of New Y'ork. No city in the world, oer tainly none outside of China, compares in extent with New Y'ork a such for eign field. Some Episcopal church workers, es pecially some men, have expressed themselves unable to attend confer' ence in August, because that is the month for their vacation. They are learning, however, that these confer ence offer an ideal plan and place for the vacation outing. Indeed, it i that fact that furnishes the secret of the remarkable growth of summer religious centers during the past decade or two. Secretary of War Taft, Uniteo State Senator Scott, of West Virginia. Congressmen Longworth and Grosvenor of Ohio, and others who are going to the Philippines thi summer with the Taft party, have promised to look into missionary and educational condition in Japan and the Phillipine, if their time permit, with the view of speaking upon the subject next winter upon their return. DEMISE OF CHICAGO STOCKYARD TRUST I Foreclosure Proceedings Against Inter national Packing Company. Chicago, June 21. The. property of the International Packing Company has! been ordered sold under foreclosure pro ceedings to satisfy a claim of $3,077,- 000. 1 The company was formed a dozen! year ago to take over the business of several of the smaller concern at the stock yards. It was the original com bination in the packing industry. But I it did not pay and has not been opened for several years. Litigation began and has been continued with many hints of scandal. The holder, in trust, of most of the company's bonds, the Illinois Trust and Savings Bank, represented that no in terest had been paid on the $2,500,000 bond issue since 180C and sought to have the mortgage foreclosed. Minority inter ests made charge of fraud and sought to prevent the sale by an injunction. the stockholders also entered the fight w f' ' we company covers a block of ground in the stock yard and originally was well equipped. The larg est holders of its securities are said U- be the men back of the great pa.kinp companies. No Secret About It.
