IN SOCIETY'S REALM Two informal afternoon card and game parties will occur Wednesday and Friday of this week, with Mr. Oorg Wood and Mitt Wood as hostesses. Light refreshments will be served on both occasions. The Friday afternoon club will meet this week with Mrs. C. W. Fulton, at her residence, Seventeenth avenue. 1 An informal card party will be given tomorrow at the home ofstreetminAdvl tomorrow at the Grand avenue home of Mrs. Frederick Prael. On Tuesday evening the ladies of St. Mary's Catholic church will give a card party for the members of the congrega tion and their friends. Painter-Rosberj Wedding. The wedding of Miss Ella Fninter and Charles Rosberg will take place, on Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock at the home of Miss Painter in East Astoria. The members of the Bridge whist club were entertained by Mrs. A. A. Finch on Mondav afternoon. Esther C.earheart, Ethel Timmona. Ella Painter, Grace Magladry, Ida Painter Ella Ekstrom, Hat tie Wise, Anna Paint er, Jauette Peterson and Mary Greg ory. Miss VanDyke Married. A very pretty wedding occurred, at Ft Stevens on Wednesday afternoon when Miss Margaret Van Dyke and Dr. Van Poole were married in the presence ot a large number of invited guests from Astoria. Many officers and ladies ot the post were preseut. Rev, Mr. Welsh of Warenton, performed the ceremony. Mis Elizabeth Schenck was bridesmaid Mr. Orphus Stoner, of North Carolina aciea as ix'st man. .us an Dyke wort, a white crcfede chine wedding gown and lace veil. She was given awav bv Col. Schneck, her uncle. White fox gloves, rosea and evergreens were used for dec orations and immediately folowiug the cereiuonv a reception was held. Dr. and Mrs, Van Poole left Wednesday night for wedding journey to Portland and San Francisco. Miss Heilborn Entertains. Miss Olga Heilborn entertained the members of the Thursday afternoon club this week. Miss Alice Wcsxl and Mrs. N. A. Marrs won the prizes for the games played. Mrs. Samuel Elmore gave a reception for the new officers of the Woman's Club on Tuesday afternoon. The resi dence was tastefully decorated for the ocasion with cut flowers. A large num ber of the club members called during the afternoon. Those who assisted in entertaining the guests by rendering musical and literary numbers of an im promptu program ' were: Mrs. A. A. Finch, Sire. S. Elmore, Mr. C. H Hig gjns and Miss Katherine Shively. Ob Thursday afternoon Miss Bessie Gregory gave a stocking shower in hon or of Miss Ella Painter, whose marriage is soon to occur. ' The decorations were Japanese laurel and ivy.: Miss Eattie Wise and Miss Janette ePterson won prizes in a floral guessing contest. Those present were the Misses Gertrude Blinn. BASEBALL GAME TODAY. Ft. Stephens add Commercial Club Will Play on Local Field. The first game of ball under the aus pices of the Lower Columbia river league will lie placed this afternoon between the teams of Ft. Stephens and the As toria Commercial club. Daniel Allen will umpire. Reports are to the effect that both teams are in excellent shape and are determined to carry otf the laurels. The Newport was intended to enter into competition with the steamers Kilburn and Alliance. Steamer Northland, Captain Jameson, is due to Arrive, from Redondo, tomor row. Schooner Oakland was towed to sea. lumber laden from Tillamook, Friday. Passenger traffic is heavy, the major ity of steamers refusing accommodations The cause is traced to the vast exodus of tourist traffic from the East occas ioned by the Lewis and Clark exposition. VALUABLE RETS LOST. Flood-tide Plays Havoc With Paraph ienalia of Fishermen. As a result of an unusual flood-tide off Peacock Spit yesterday a number of Lower-river fishermen are lamenting the loss of their gillnet. According to Captain Parker, of the Nahcotta, who arrived in the city last night, the life- saving crew picked up several nets and returned them to their owners. It is impossible to determine at present how many nts are adrift. Burial of Mrs. McMullen. The funeral of the late Mrs. Walter McMullen will take place this afternoon at 1 o'clock from the First Haptist church. The services will be conducted by Rev. L. J. Trumbull.
