During the last Hague tribunal the world stood aghast at President Roose velt's strenuous advocacy for a univer pal peace and his apparent indifference to the shocked nerves of a pomp in naicu royalty. Again the world evi- ueneeti us asionisiunent over tlie plain spoken words of John Hay while ad dressing a gathering of peace advocates last December in Boston. Behold the aftermath, the intelligent appreciatior of American men and American ways the final capitulation to President Roosevelt's fearless personality. In preference to Chefoo or Paris and ig noring the president's suggestion of The Hague, the Far East belligerents have elected Washington as the place of meeting for their plenipotentaries. It is difficult to determine, with any degree of certainty, when the peace conference will occur. Dispatches would indicate the time is of much concern to diplomats in so far as none relishes the possibility of a mid summer meeting. In the event the conference should be deferred until lata in the year, the al ternative is an amistice which should speedily be declared. For more than a year the tales of dolorous suffering among the belligerent armies on the Manchurian frontier and in the ma rine theater of the war have plunged; not only this country, but every civil ized nation in the world, into profound sorrow. General Sherman's immortal utterance, ''War is Hell," is brief and fittingly describes the real horror of the awful strife in the Far East. A cul mination of peace negotiations in the very near future will be welcomed by every person who displays just a little: interest in the suffering of fellow beings. and a resoi? recently opened, the people of Portland are offered no place of recreation, excepting the exposition, which is beyond the means 0 the ma jority. Thi? assumption that they will pay twenty-live cents for admittance to the exposition grounds, in preference to the fee of 10 cents at other amusement places, is reasonable. This question is of paramount importance and should be carefully weighed by Xir. Goode aud his worthy colleagues. 0 1 COMMENT In Mullan, Idaho, a cow gave birth to three calves. Would Roosevelt have tlie heart to order the death of such a mother J We understand that a band at the exposition played Chopin's "March Fun ebre" to liven up a Portland crowd. That recalls Sellwood where they play dead marches for quick-step. Grover Cleveland, as a trustee f tfce Equitable, figured with two of his col leagues in a star-chamber meeting. If the eminent statesman's inclinations are as of yore, we can expect a large bond issue as a result of the conference. A Portland policeman arrested a young couple for plucking a single rose from a bush. It seems deplorable that the "Rose City's" star-adorned gentry- can not meet with more success among the thugs so numerous during the ex position period. The Columbia Southern is to be ex tended from Shaniko to Bend, a thriv ing town of 800 people, on the Des hutes river. It is highly probable that the road will bend so frequently ere it reaches Bend, t rathe will receive a severe setback. In such emergency, Bendites may "Shoot Des"ehutes." Wouldn't that give Canadian statesmen the shivers? ' s FAIR ADMISSION'S. Exposition President Goode announces that the price of Sunday admission to the Lewis and Clark Centennial will bo twenty-five cents. He arrives at this conclusion after carefully studying con ditions and appreciating that all build ings are closed on the Sabbath. The people of Portland have been aware of this for some weeks and the smallness of the attendance is largely due to their very intelligent understanding. A word to Mr. Goode in the history of expositions, two have been wholly successful. The Astorian has no desire to place itself on record as predicting the possible failure of the Lewis and Clark enterprise. As a matter of fact it has every hope for the success of Portland's Fair. The two exhibitive events mentioned were held at Nash ville and Omaha. Following the close of the Nashville exposition. $30,0(10 re mained in the treasury of the corpora tion and tlie sil? was purchased as a public park for the city. The Omaha exposition campany paid 100 cents on the dollar to its stock holders. Men who have given study to the vir tues of expositions trace the success of these enterprises to the popular admis sion rates. After 7 o'clock in the even ing entrance to the grounds was gained for a twenly-five-cent fee. Such is the argument now presented to tlie Lewi and Clark exposition officials. Natur allly an element is in evidence that not only can afford, but will gladly pay the fifty-cent admission. This element, however, is not sufficiently large to sup port the exposition. Aside from some very poor theaters Advices from London are to the effect that the marriage of Princess Margaret rictoria of Connaught and Prince Gus tavus Adolphus, heir presumptive to the throne of Sweden, was solemnized at Windsor, in St. George's chapel. Ul timately the prince will appreciate how solemn was the ceremony. A Franklin Pa., man visiting Port land, argues that the most effective method of closing saloons is to promul gate the virtues of prohibition. Travel ing through Oregon he claims that in nearly every sawmill town he saw sa loons. It is to be presumed the gentle man who, by the way, is a "gas" oper ator, has traveled through Pennsylvania Washington has been selected by the Far East Bellijrerent as the city In which to hold a peace conference, with the object in view of ending the pres ent Russo-Japanese strife. The illus trious father of our country uttered the immortal phrase, "In times of peace, be prepared for war." Heeding this. Nicholas will undoubtedly order several new battleships, to be used later as tar gets by Togo. The much booted "open door" ques tion apparently has migrated across the Pacific. Secretary of War Taft favors Chinese immigration. He avers it i better to disregard the unreasonable de mands of the deeply prejudiced people of the West, rather than to continue attempts at apprehending eoolies, with the result that Chinese of culture are often humiliated. If Secretary Taft will move his ample proportions to the Pacific coast and delve into the real con ditions, be will soon change his opinion. "The big stick seems to be Wring the olive leaves of peace," says the New York Tribune. The comment is worthy of reproduction. The opinion prevails that the Eng lish sense of humor is dull. The follow ing from 'Punch" are convincing that such is not the case: He. I was an intimate friend of your late husband. Can't you give me some thing to remember him by!" She (shyly). How would I do? ''Father, it is raining." 'Oh, well, let it rain." ''I was going to, father." Clergyman. And how is your hus band this morning, Mrs. Marley? Mrs. Marlev. Thank ve, sir. e's no belter. The doctor's afraid morality'll set in. President Roosevelt may not force a railroad rate regulation bill throuiih his lecial session of congress, but he will force a lot of slippery statesmen to come from cover. .. ...... j. a interment ana internment mean so nearly the same thing for the Russian warships at Manila that the confusion of the words by several newspaper 1 not altogether strange. When Mayor Dunne has succeeded In giving Chicago immediate municipal own ership he may receive an invitation to visit Glasgo wand tell how it was done Let us hope that the Japanese will re frain their enthusiasm and not get To go into trouble by giving him a house or coaxing him to run for president. The man who wrote that if the world were flat, there would be a dude on each comer, should have added, "standing in front of the saloon." o The Eugene Guard is afraid some or its eitiens will blow themselves at the Lewis and Clark fair.
