Of Eva Edward of San Joa waa thU
afternoon in a room ot a hotel ia Gil
roy. There waa a bullet wound over
her heart and another in her head. Be
side the bed the body of a man waa
found lylnj on the floor with a bullet
bole near his temple. Both bodiea
were lying in poola of blood. The man
wi a Japanese and la thought to hav;
been a resident of .Alvarado. The
woman waa el: her reading- or sleeping
when killed, aa an open bible and a
newspaper were' found lying on the

Seaside Ledge Will Join Astoria Lodge
of Eagle.
Mr. Kelleher, representing th Sa
side lodge, Fraterlal Order of Eagles,
arrived in Astoria yesterday and a
large number will come up today for
the purpose of combining the two
lodges Into one. There will no doubt
be a large and enthusiastic meeting ot
the local aerla today to give the bro It
ers from Seaside a rousing reception.

New York. May 20. The charge of
grand larceny made on April 4 against
D. Smith, president of a construction
company, and Mr. Smith waa dis
charged. The complaint was sworn to
by Thomas S okes, who charged Smith
with misappropriating funds ot th
Stokes estate. The specific sum men
tion In the complaint was (24.000. but
it was said at the time that an ac
counting was to be asked for nearl
11,000,000. Great secrecy surrounded
the arrest of Smith,' which waa maj
by an attache of the district attorney's
office and definite Information was ai
the time refused by all par.le to the
case. In dismissing tn; case tne mag
istral, said it had no criminal aspect
whatever, the evidence disclosing noth
ing more than a disagreement as to an
accounting.

W. W. Whipple Notifies Recorder An

A telegram was reclved from W. W.
Whipple by Auditor Olof Anderson
yesterday, announcing that he had ac
cepted the franchise granted nearly
two months ago by the common coun
cil for the purpose of building a tele
phone and electric light plant snd s
gas plant in Astoria. The first year's
license amounting to $500 was receiver
yesterday by Treasurer Thos. Dealy,
this being the amount of the flrst yeart
license, A letter was also received
from Whipple's attorney from Seattle,
statig that the plants would be erect
ed. It Is reported that Mr. Whipple
has been In New Tork and has been
successful In enllsltlng capital In the
enterprise snd that work will be com-

summer. Doubt existed In the minds
of many people ot Astoria In Mr. Whip
