NEW BEAUTY IN WASH GOODS
The Mereerixatlo of Fabric Gives
Tham th Glossy Finish of Silk Whila
Othara Ara Equally Adaptad to Make
' Ona Look Pratty.
Every season the wash gooda tak on
tome new beaut In finish or design
until It aeema that there U nothing fur
tber to ba desired. .The mercerUatlon
of aJ) these fabrlca give then the
glossy finish of Ilk and make then
softer to tbe touch and lose difficult to
drape. The greatest difficult In cotton
gooda berotofore baa been that the
were either adfit and unwlokly or elae
too aoft and flabby after one or two
days' wear. Now we can cbooao be
tween the thick linen flnlab of the
klnda of cotton gooda designed for
wahfta and the material used for full
dresses only. The first aort la designed
ly made rather heavy and cloao and
mokes admirable walata for everyday
wear, while, the otbera are admirably
adapted to make one look pretty.
Among tfce heavier gooda are the dark
blue and red Cheviot, and these ae aJ
mercerized, ao that they have the rich
luster of silk. The colore are very dain
ty and artlMtlc, running mosUy In
gruya, dull ml a, bluea of various tint,
Macs and beIIotroiea. In fact, these
colore aoem to be In evidence In every
line of gooda, completely displacing the
browns of the past season. A few tans
are aecn and a few delicate biscuit
shades, but the colors mentioned are
thorn of the spring of 1005. In addition
to them are seen champagne, old ruse,
cardinal, green In several shades, ca
nary, black, creme and wild rose pink.

beautlfurcolorar tEey will become very
popular. In atrlng color they were very
fashionable some ten years ago, out
now they are Infinitely hnndsomer.
They are strong too. In the eollennes
there are over twenty-five beuutlful col
ors and also black and white, and they
m:iy be mudo Into pretty gowns with
the aid of lace and ribbon. Ribbon will
be much more lu demand this season
tnan for some time. 'Home of the cotton
good hiive borders so arranged that
they can li umi for ruilles or flounces,
as may be pn-fernnl. Silk dotted mulls
are very pretty and are shown In many
varieties so far as color and alee of
dots are eoneernej.
Dimity, wlih Its delicate floral fan

ty, also with duls and different floral
designs, and new and exceptionally
pretty organdies are among the sum
mer goods which are now being eager
ly bought for construction during Lent
So are the excellent shrunken linen
Buttings In dull IIiiIhIi and In colore and
white. Then are many embroidered
mulls and awly-ies to clrxm from, all
ao One and deUcute that ope would al
most shrink from cutting such fabrics.
I notice, too, tlmt there Is a ltirge range
of new rie!j!iN In all wool challlcs.
Thjs Is a Ix-iiuilful ruitterliil, soft end
flue, and a favorite with vronieu of re
fined tastes for home wear, though It la
quite sullulile for the street In n sea
son. Polka dots are seen In fully bill
of these.
The Vogue of Ribbons.
Ribbons are to have a greater promi
nence than they have bad for some
time, and the newest of them are truly
beautiful. Moire aash ribbon Is seven
Inches wide and cornea In blue, pink,
turquoise, nlle, cardinal, navy, white,
cream and black. There are two
shades of each color. There la a crepe
de chine ribbon seven Inches wide. In
all the colors, very soft and flexible,
and a fnllletine. Ave and a half Inches
Wide, In all the shudea, besides the
novelties In shadow, pompadour fancy
striped, polka dotted and plaid effecU.
Plaids of all oln are wen. There are
many dreM goods of plulds of various
kinds, but mostly those of the ijuletest
colors. Several designs or cotton goods
are plaid and mercerized vMhat they
resemble silk The tartMi pin Ids are
ma'de Into shirt walats, with the fold
down the frout made bias, or perhaps
the waist Itself ia cut bins. Some of
the plaids are scarcely more than
checks, but the color! rips are In good
taste, being white and red, black and
reseda, brown, pink, pale blue, navy
blue and tan and heliotrope.
Shirt walata are of every color, but
the white onn are certainly the moat
pleaalng. eiecl;i!ly the linen ones,
which hare a distinction and are made
In tailor style, with utrnps, plaits or
drawn work or a little fine embroidery
done by hand. Some very fancy walnts
are made of valwiclennes all overs, and
others of Initiation cluny are very
dressy. In aplte of ttie fact that proph
eta said otherwise, It wem that every
thing Is made up Into sepurnte waists.

Th Inane of ftar.
In the twelfth chanter of the book
of Judges It I told how the Glleadltea
slew forty and two thousand Ephratm
Itca at the piisKiigea of Jordan be
cause they pronounced "8hIbbolethM
"slhboleth." That was a race Issue.
By their faulty speech the forty and
two thousand proved themselves to be
of another race, and they were alaln.
Read ancient history and learn that In
the dark backward and abysm of time
the hand of every man of one race was
against the baud of every man of all
other races. Stranger meant enemy,
alien meant foe. Then the race issue
was at Its strongest. Centuries have
passed. Almost unlversnl tolerance has
come about. While races still preserve
their national Identity, Ingress and
egress are, for the most part, free and
open. The sons of one rnv ? f-ee-ly
