Official an nouncement of a reduction of telephone tolls in Manhattan, to take effect on May 1, has been made by Union N. BetheiU first vice president and general manager of the New Tork Telephone Company. All direct line business subscribers will be charged the new schedule of rates regardless of the rates named In the contract now existing between the subscribers and the company. This action was determined on at a meeting of the board of directors of the company who have not only re duced the schedule of rates on limited calls, but have revised other schedules to go Into effect in the near future. This revision refers to the schedule of toll rates between the several tele phone districts In New Tork city. The whole subject has been recently the cause of much agitation In the news papers and before legislative commit tees at Albany. What reduction will be made In the tolls between the various boroughs of Greater New Tork Is as yet unknown, but the schedules made public so far show that rates for direct line busi ness will be lowered on the basis of 20 per cent to small subscribers and about 10 per cent to larger subscribers. In other words, a customer who now pays 75 a year for 800 outgoing messages will obtain the same service for $60. The subscriber who pays $228 now for 4500 calls will pay $204, a reduction of about 10 per cent Alarming Increase in Brooklyn. New York, March 22. It Is generally believed by ecclesiastical au thorities that an annulment will be granted as even admitting that the Parkhurst Reed marriage was cele brated with a dispensation which con sidered him a Protestant, the marriage Is null and void. Cook, who dispenses New Jersey Jus tice at Madison, in that state, has tie ided that a woman's tongue when used upon a Justice of the peace be come a concealed weapon. A contract has been closed between the Pittsburg Steel Company and the Republic Iron & Steel Company for the delivery of 150,000 tons of steel billets during t'ne year beginning March 1, 1905. At the same time another contract was closed with the United States Steel Corpora tion for 50,000 tons of billets for deliv ery during the same period. The price was the same In both cases $20 a ton, or a total of $4,000,000, or $1 below the price fixed by the billet pool, and from $2 to $10 below the price paid in the open market at this time. In the shallow water of the lake beach at Wlnnetka the body of a young woman 5ias been found. It appeared to have been In the water only a short time. No marks "New York, March 22. August Bel mont, on behalf of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company, will notify the members of the committee on routes and plans of the rapid transit commis sion today, Bays the Herald, that his company is willing to bid for all the more Important of the hew routes agreed to by the committee and stands ready to build them with private capi tal, providing the new lines be exempt from taxation during the life of his contract to operate them. The proposed new lines, touching many sections of the city not reached by the subway will involve expenditures of at least $100, 000,000. A report prepared by the committee on routes will he submitted to me rapid transit commission at Its session tomorrow. If this is adopted It will be forwarded to the board of aldermen at once so that the city's consent to the routes may be obtained as soon as pos sible. Consents of property owners along the proposed lines are now be ing secured by counsel for the rapid transit commission.
