Th scenes at : THE ANNUAL REGATTA. The decision of the Joint conference committee tQ hold an annual, regatta in Astoria wUl meet with the approval of nine-tentba of the people. , More particularly on account of the change in the detail and' the selection of C. H. Callenjer to have the management of the affair. , The committee appointed by the Push Club, Chamber of Com merce and Grocers' Association is to be commended on its selection. It is a guarantee that the regatta will be in competent hands and is an assur ance of Its success. It will be con ducted along business lines and the loose, slip-shod, mismanagement that characterised last year"a regatta will be entirely eliminated. Where aa im portant a feature la Inaugurated for Astoria It should be In the hands of competent business men. Instead of In the bands of incompetent Uda who have no idea of the value of money. At the meeting of the Joint commit tee held Monday night, the whole mat ter waa gone over. The important question of selecting a manager was settled, but the duties of the commit tee are not ended. They win continue to be an advisory board to the com mlttee. Everyone of the committee is a prominent business man of Asto ria. identified with Us growth and in tereatpj in its future, advancement They are going to make the fair a sue 'esa for the sole reason, that they be lieve it will be a benefit to Astoria and every merchant, no matter what. line of business he may be engaged In. Having had experience in the dls bursements of large sums of money it Is a guarantee to the subscribers to the regatta fund that every dollar contributed will be accounted for, and all living here, none of them will run awav with moneys collected at the grand stand or from the concessions A regatta in Astoria this year is ot the utmost importance. In view of tht fact that Astoria and Clatsop county will not be represented at the Lewi and Clark fair. There will be thou sands of visitors in Astoria during the month of August, when the regatta will be held. These visitors will be In addition to the usual number that attend from Portland and contiguous territory. It will , be an opportunity for "the Chamber of Commerce and Push Club to prepare and distribute suitable literature to people from the east. It must be borne in mind that a large number of eastern and south era and even the middle west people coming to Portland will come to As toria to see the Pacific ocean. This will be M much of an attraction as the exhibits at the fair. In this connctlon the Astorlan would like to make a suggestion. Instead of getting out a program as has usu ally been done, get out a speciad edi tion of each of the Astoria newspa pers, with the programme printed therein, and each paper to contain a certain amount of descriptive matter of the resources of the city and coun ty. The Astorlan, News, Budget and Herald can each get out a special edi tlon on a certain day assigned by the committee. The cost will not be very much, compared to the benefit that will accrue. Every person coming here from the east, or who writes for information, invariable desires to see a copy of the home newspaper. They form ideas of the locality more from newsDaters than from booklets or ' pamphlets which resemble the before and after taking circular of a patent mPiUrlne advertisement. Besides, It will encourage the newspapers to work for the fair. It will leave the money at home Instead of giving it to some itinerant advertising fakir who has no interest in the city or county. When programs are printed, as they have been, the cost has to be paid In ad vertlsements by local merchants- who tW u-tll attend tha reaatta will " .. be from the far east, the middle west and thei south People from every state in the union will wne here. A lane number of them will come with the Idea ot looking tor place to invest or make their home. In this man ner more axod can be accomplished tor Astoria and Clatsop cointy than the finest exhibit that could be made t the fair. The county cour has au thority to spend 11000 for advertising Clatsop county. It would no doubt be .vwi.lv and willtnK to appropriate thi amount to the newspaper to publish ing descriptive matter of the city and county and its resources.,- . .,,v. imnnrtnnt matter which has been suggested by Judge Bowlby the Virginia mine today were the, most and which will have the approval or gruesome ami narrowm .... ,v.k.. r rmw la to haveL.i in this section.
