What would an American dock farm

ketT ' That la the1 regular method era
ployed by the poultrymen who lire
along the great waterway, of China
The Chinese art very fond of dock.
Nearly every farmer keep, a few to
hi own dm, but aloog the rlf era rate
log tbeta for market la a profitable
boalne..
la American ducka ralaed for market
bare vary little water In which tt
swim and play. The poultrymen do
not think It la good for them to bare
much exerdae. It harden their mus
cle, and make, their fleab tough and
not ao good to eat j
So Instead of swimming all day la
ponda or lake, or stream, the dock, are
kept, abut op la email pens, where they
have no room to waddle about and can
only atand Mill and eat and grow fat
Then, when they are In prime condi
tlon, they are killed and dreescd and
ahlpped to market In barrela, and their
feathera make an additional source of
income to the poultryman. '
The Chinaman, however, la quite coo-
tent to let hi dock, hare aa mock ox
erdae aa they like, ud they get a great
deal bunting for their food, of which
they receive only amall auppllea from
the poultryman. vr i i
On. result la that the Chlneae duck
la a good, atron awlmver, and that la
. fortunate circumstance for the poul
tryman when It cornea time to go to
market :
He doea not lire on a railroad. If he
did, he would not be likely to use it
for to him It la a newfangled derice for
the spread of eril. lie know., too,' a
more economical method than putting
his duck. In crate, and paying freight
on one of the river boats. Time doea
not mean much to him, and be can af
ford to spend a few days, If necessary,
to going to market -
When be pick out the ducka be
means to tell, the Chine, farmer dee
the leg of one to that of another with a
stout cord and continue, the process
until the whole lot la bound together.
Sometime there are hundrede thus
fastened In one flock; ' "
It la not easy to make such . flock
swim together or follow the direction
desired..- The farmer, take, bla boat
and starts to drive them, sculling be
hind or drifting on the current and,
boating the water with long bamboo
pole to tnake them swim along and
the right way. If the farmer has
large, family and two or three boats,
ao (hat bla sons can help, his can usual
ly manage to get his ducks to market
without outside aid, tut If be Is not ao
fortunate he will Join with other duck
raisers and nerd the flock In combine
Thua It not Infrequently happens that
thousand, of ducka wllf be swimming
along down the Tangtee, apparently la
one flock, with ' A 6orm or more earn
pans drifting behind them, filled wit!;
men, women and boys, thrashing the
water with bamboos to hurry on the
ducks.
It is hard enough to make a flock of
hungry, foolish ducka swim on about
their business when there la plenty of
room and no Interference, but that, sel
dom hnppena on a Chinese river. Usual
ly these streams swarm with clumsy,
unwieldy Junks, and on the Tangtae
there la a great deal of steamer traffic.
The friendly Junkmen will almost al
ways belp the duck herders to keep the
flocks clear of the boats by beating the
water with bamboos, but .teamen
have neither time nor Inclination for
auch bother, and ao It sometimes hap
pens that a flock la cut In two by
steamer. Then there la a great deal of
trouble and excited talk before the flock
can be reunited and got peacefully on
its way again.
Sometime, also It happens that docks
of one flock get mxed up with those of
another, and then there la a dreadful
tangle and anarL - But the patient Chi
neae get them aepa rated Into the proper
nocks again at last and all so cheer
fully together to market-Youth'. Com

Originally buccaneer, were peaceful
English, French and Dutch settlers In
the 8panlah West Indies, and they re
ceived their name on account of their
custom of drying their meat In the In
dian fashion, on a buccan, or hurdle.
The Spaniard, resented strongly the
intrusion of these foreigners and mndtj
many attempts to oust them, but the
buccaneer were a hardy set of men
and crack shots , with the musket' so
they successfully resisted all the Span
lards' attacks and obstinately remained
In the Islands. What It wos that caus
ed the buccaneers to abaudon their
comparatively peaceful mode of living
and take to piracy it Is hard to say.
Possibly the constant harrying ' to
which they were subjected by the
Spaniards prompted them to retaliate:
but whatever the reason, their depre-
dntious soon rendered the passage of
the Caribbean sea' an undertaking of
extreme danger to merchantmen, and
the word buccaneer has come down as
a synonym for robbery, murder and all

Flow Is It possible, then, you ask, that
men are to be found willing to watch
them? 'It is very easy. Sheep herding

The greaser Is not the only shepherd

an occasional college man tending the

3,000 bleatera for the summer. In au
tumn tbey found him insane, on his
hand, and knees among the abeep,
bleating with them. Day after day bis

Here are the three deadly symptoms
of bid age; Selfishness, stagnation. In
tolerance. ;: .
If we find them In ourselves we may
know we are growing old, even if we
are on the merry side of thirty. But
happily, we have three defenses, which
are invulnerable. If we use them we
shall die young If we live to be a bun
area. They are: Sympathy progress,
tolerance.
The first la the hardest to most of
us, because our own little prison of
the actual Is so Immensely Important to
us. There la no denying the fact that
when you have a toothache yourself it
la hard to have to consider other peo
