Not less than 100 prominent people
called at the Artorlan office yesterday
to examine the Tuttle charter. There
was not a single objection registered
iigiilnst It when Its provisions wer
known. Nlne-tnths of those who read
It, proclaimed It to be In the Interests
of economy and good government.
Many of them admitted that they had
been inisk-d by report publUhed ana

PERSONAL MENTION.
tl has cost the tax payers of Asto
ria over 13000 for doing the city ad
vertising during the past two years,
whereas If bid had been asked for a
year ago this expense could have been
saved. The Astorian will shortly pub
llflh a history of the whole political
scheme. The facts and figures sup
ported by the records are on file in
this office. The stench that will arise
from the exposure will be sufficient
to drive a polecat Into convulsions.

The county court met yesterday
morning but took no action relative
to making the annual tax levy. Din
trlct Attorney Allen requested the
court to defer action until he could
examine more thoroughly Into the mat
ter. The county court has practically
decided to make a levy of S mills foi
the first year and 5 mills for each
subsequent year until the total amount
Is raised. The S-mlll levy will raise
111,194 and the S-mlll levy will raise
$21,158, based upon the present as-
eseed valuation.
The people of Clatsop county not
having given the county court any en
couragement for an exhibit at the
Lewis and Clark fair, the county court
yesterday decided not to make any ex
hibit. The order recites the fact that
appeals have been made to the people
ot Clatsop county, but no. response has
been received, and It Is taken as an
Indication that Clatsop county does not
want to be represented. It will be the
only county In the state that will not
have an exhibit. It certainly does not
spenk well for the enterprise of Asto
ria. 1

Fisher Bros, will supply the city with
all Rood required in its line, and
Prael & Elgner will compel! all freight
to be hauled by that company. When
W. J. Cook was a member of the firm
of Prael ft Cook, no such things were
Insisted on. The matter of purchas
ing supplies and hauling is all left to
the various committees and it is dis
tributed among all the merchants and
transfer companies. The police com
mission has never dictated as to the
purchase of supplies and hauling. It
simply show what deceptive methods
are employed by dishonest politicians
to defeat the will of the majority.
