TAX SALE MADE. Bstania Church. Christmas eve was a happy time for the children. The church and the tree were nicely decorated, and a pleasing program was rendered. Costly pres ents were given to the children from the Sunday school and both young and old received many gifts. Rev. O. E. Haahelm is here again, after a trip to Puget island. He went p on the morning train Monday and conducted services at 10:10 a. m.. and in the afternoon young aa well as old gathered around a well adorned Christ maa tree and listened to a short but good program. On New .Tear's eve the Betania Mis sion society is going to have a festival to the basement of the church. The program will begin at 8:30 and last un til the new year. It will consist of songs, music and short addresses. Re freshments will be served. At the meeting of the glllnet fisher men, trappers, seiners and representa Uvea from the legislature at the Cham ber of Commerce rooms Tuesday very little business was transacted. The only matters considered were voting down the Sunday closing law, and fixing the close season. The meeting also agreed upon the question of the state furnish ing a patrol boat for the master fish warden. It is understood that this lat ter proposition will meet with opposi tion from the up river fishermen and cannerymen. The lower Columbia river fishermen are willing and anxious to observe the law, providing the up river fishermen do the same. Timper Land Owners Exempted on Or der of Circuit Judge. The employes of the sheriff's office were kept busy all day yesterday with the annual tax sale. Until the exten slons are completed the amount of the sale will not be known, but Chief Deputy Binder estlmatea the amount aa being in the neighborhood of $7000. An order from Circuit judge Mc Brld was interposed in the interest of the timber land owners who protested on several grounds. Sale In their caaea waa postponed to an Indefinite date in order that an exposition of the con tentions might be made. HOTEL ARRIVALS. The question as to who is to fur nish an opinion as to the closing up ef the saloons in Unlontown under the provisions of the prohibition law on January 1, is yet undetermined. City Attorney Smith is of the opinion that District Attorney Harrison Allen should furnish the opinion, and Allen Is f the opinion that if the city attorney will attend to his business as faith fully as he does, there can be no doubt as to who shall furnish the opinion. The fact that the saloons are located over tide water, cuts no figure. They are within the limits of the city of As toria, the common council recognizes this fact by granting them liquor li censes, and under the law, the money paid by them for licenses must be re funded by the city. All the tide lands upon which the saloons are erected are assessed for municipal taxes, and is lust as much a part of the city as sa loons situated on high land. Such con tentions are simply a subterfuge. A marriage license was issued yes terday to John A. NIemela and Miss Emma Walitalo, both of Clatsop county. A subscription was circulated yes terday to raise 170 for the benefit of Carl Runyon to liquidate the money he stole from Fred Enqulst It is claimed that if the money la repaid, the prose cution will be dropped.
