Clerk Clinton of special levies In road
and school districts ss follows: Elsie,

Clifton school district has made a

filed with County Clerk Clinton yester

W. 11. Copclnnd of Portland Is In the
city to attend a meeting of the Nehalem
Coal Company. He has not decided
when work will be commenced on his

street, but nrobably not until after
February 1, which Is the time given
for the present occupants to move from
the property.
Rev. O. M. Holden, pastor of the
Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran
church, expects to leave tonight for
Hpokone. Rev. Holden will occupy
the pulpit of his church st that place
for about three or four months. In

officiate, preaching his first sermon

book has been completed and the book
will be finished this wek. It Is one of
the most complete and concise charter
and ordinance bonks ever published.
The receipts from fines and forfei
tures In the police court up to last
night for ths month Is 1689. There Is
sbout 1200 mors due which will bring
the total up to about $900. The total
receipts for the year, mostly from
gambling fines, will be over $11,000, and
about $6000 from sundry licenses, mak
ing a total of over $17,000, equal to the
amount received from liquor licenses.
The trial of liud Knutsen on a charge
of assault and battery on Mr. Griffiths,
wherein Griffiths suffered a fractured
elbow, will be heard In the justice court
this morning.
Harry Hamblct of Portland was In
the city yesterday. Mr. Hamblet Is In
close touch with Portland and eastern
capitalists, and states that Astoria Is
being more discussed than any other
city In the state. He believes that
there Is a prosperous future In store
for Astoria and that It will grow more
during the next year than In any pre
vious year.

at Hatteras first saw the steamer about
noon. Later It was seen she was
grounded on the Inner shoals known as
"Hells Hole." The heavy seas ca

erating at I o'clock.

headquarters.
Although the McBrlde forces will be
In the minority In the legislature, the
entranec of the governor Into the fight
has caused much speculation as to the
effect It will have upon the chances of I
various aspirants.

Drowned In Accident at
Portlsnd.
Portland, Dec. 28. The barge Mon'
arch, moored along side the oriental
liner Arabia, capsized today and one
of the six men working on her was
drowned.
Ti. Monarch was loaded with coal.
which was being transferred to the
steamer's hold. The accident was sud
den and it la presumed the man
drowsed was caught by the coal and
carried with It to the bottom of the
river.
There will be a meeting of the stock
holders and officers of the Nehalem
root Comnanv this morning at 10
o'clock at Hnnthorn's hall. The object
of the meeting Is to listen to a report
of the directors as to the present ftnnn
clal condition of the company; the
amount of work that has been per
formed and the disbursement of the
money paid In by the stockholders.

It is stated that the spiling on Ex
change street, between Seventeenth
and the Clatsop mill Is rotten, and that
the supports carrying the pipe line of
the Astoria water system Is liable to
break down at any time. In this event
Unner Astoria would be cut off from
water supply and fire protection. There
Is a general demand on the part of the
public that the street be Improved, but
It has no hopes of any Improvement
under the present administration, 1
A new foundation is to be put under
the store at the corner of Commercial
and Eleventh streets. The building
will be remoddled and made into one
store and will be occupied by S. Dan
xlser Sl Co. when completed. It will
be a modern, up to date store when
completed and one of the finest In the
city.
The common council of the town of
Warrenton la contemplating the build
Ing of a town hall commesurate with
the growing interests of the town. 8ev
eral sites have been offered, but none
has been selected, but will be In the
near future. Estimated cost of the new
hall Is $1000. It will not be as elab
orate as the town hall at Seaside, which
Is considered one of the best and
cheapest erected halls of any town In
the state.
FATAL ACCIDENT.
Crew on Street Car Nearly Lynched
For It
Seattle. Dec. 28. Cries of "String up
the train crew!" followed the running
down and killing of a man whose name
Is believed to be James M. Myler. to
day. The man was crushed to death
under the wheels of a gravel train on
the street railroad.
W. H. Bell, motorman, S, T. Priest,
conductor and J. II. Griffith, brakeman.
were assailed by a mob and had to be
taken by the police to the station to
save them from serious Injury.

available silver bullion of this country
Is almost exhausted, and unless con
gress takes prompt action to relieve
the situation by authorising the pur
chase of more sliver bullion for coin
age, or by accepting some temporary
remedy, our commerce would be great
ly hampered.
W. J. Cook, one of the Astoria police
commissioners, arrived In the city yes
terduy. He still claims his residence
In Astoria, also claims thnt he still
holds the office of police commissioner
and proposes to hang onto It until the
end of His term.

Porter Resigns.
New York. Dec. 28. The Herald to
day says: "It has been definitely de
cided by General Horace Porter to re
tire aa ambassador to France, and he
will have his resignation In the hands
of the president before the lnaugura
tlon. Porter's successor will undoubt
edly be George von 1'Meler, who Is at
present ambassador to Italy.

cided by the International Carriage and
Wasron Workers' Union to move the
organisation's national headquarters to
Chicago from New York early in Janu
