A representative of tho Aitortnn In
tervlewed a number of prominent oltl
tent relative to the hotel proposition,
Many of them did not want their names
mentioned, while a few had no objec
tions to being quoted. The concensus
of opinion prevails that a hotel Is a
necessary adjunct to Astoria, In view
of the fact that the Lewis and Clark
fair next year Is certain to bring thou
sands of visitors to Astoria, and our
present hotels can only be dlstln
gulshed from other old rockeries, by
the name over the door.
A prominent dry goods merchant
gave it as his opinion that Astoria
needed and must have a good hotel, one
that will be an honor and credit to the
city. In his opinion, the present hotels.
so-called, answered all the wants and
requirements of the city when It was

Astoria demanded a modern hotel, or
namental In appearance, and with
ample accommodations for visitors vis
iting the city, who expect different ac
commodations than accorded to visit
ors of Skomakawa and Warrenton. He
thought tho committee ought to give
evidence that It Is still upon earth, and
not defunct, as a large majority are
Inclined to believe.
Herman Wise stated that he was
once a member of the committee ap
pointed to secure a hotel, and that the
whole matter was left to a subcom
mittee, and after waiting many moons
for them to get a move on, he resigned.

"What do I think of the hotel propo
sition," said a prominent property
owner, " well I believe as a lurge ma
jority of others, that we need a hotel,
and there Is no reason why one should
not be built. I have always supposed
that when the community entrusted the
business of formulating plans for a ho
tel that they should at least report
progress. I was at the meeting and
voiced my sentiments In favor of a ho
tel and agreed to assist It financially.
I was under the Impression that the
committee would report as soon as
plans could be perfected, but I am In

why the committee does not report
some plan of action. It might relieve
the situation by resigning and have n

definite plun of action to awaken en

trouble to rales the necessary funds."
Several other prominent citizen
were Interviewed, and not one of them
expressed an opinion In opposition to
the hotel project. It Is now up lo the
committee to satisfy the public that
they are still on earth.
