Considerable sympathy has been worked ud In Astoria In th interests of Mrs. Moore, the young woman who attempted to commit suicide last Thursday night by Jumping overboard. Some of the charitably inclined peo Die secured a room for her in a private lodging house and have made arrange ments to give her employment until such time as she can hear from her husband. Mrs. Moore is not her right name, although her name la known to the police, who out of sympathy for the woman kent the matter a secret Chinaman in Seattle and they run a restaurant there. About a month or so ago the Chinaman disposed of his busi ness and left the city. He is now a resident of Yakima, Wash. Mrs. Hop Sing, or Moore, being penniless and without the means of support came to Astoria about two weeks ago. No at tention was paid to her until her at- HOTEL ARRIVALS. Parker House. P. Williamson, City. Henry A. Bergman, Ft. Columbia. Thomas Jones, U. S. S. Perry. Nevrton McCoy, Portland. K. Gleason, Portland. The republicans seem determined to carry the police commission fight Into the courts. If their demands are not recorniaed by the common council. Yesterday morning, F. J. Carney, R. V. Jones and R. F. Prael, appeared be fore Auditor Anderson and demanded their certificates of election. Mr. An derson had a vague recollection of meeting the three gentlemen In a quiet way at some social function, but when It sets down to a Question of political expediency, and acting under the In structions of the city attorney, his honor politely refused to issue cer tificates of election. The Silver Star Trio, and quasi police commissioners elect, then went before a notary pub lic and raising their right hands, solemnly swore to discharge the duties of police commissioners for the city of Astoria to the best of their ability, and in conformity to the laws of the state of Oregon, so help me God. After having passed through this trying or deal they went to the auditors' offloe and asked that the oaths of offlce be filed, which was done, , One thing Is certain, that while pub lic sentiment was in the first Instance against the actions of the republicans, it has now shifted to the democrats, and a general demand Is' made that the offices of Police Commissioners Barker and Cook be declared vacant and two residents and tax payers be appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the council. If this is not done, the majority of the people, irrespective of party, will indorse the contentions of the republicans. W. J. Cook has forfeited all rights or claims he ever had to the office. He has never attended but two meet ings of the committee, has only been in Astoria less than three months dur What WISE'S Customers Say: It' PiiiMiurA to Trade with Herman Wise." Hats. As a rule a woman who will marry a Chinaman Is past redemption, but if she is sincere in her determination to reform, she will receive the assistance of the people of Astoria. There Is no complaint about bnalness at the Star saloon. Good goods and courteous treatment will draw trade to any first-class saloon. That's what makes business good at the Star. The report lacks confirmation. There Is only one place in Astoria that carries the genuine Old Georgia, Moonshine, corn whisky. P. E. Pet erson of the Mirror, has received a consignment direct from the distillery. th. Dresent Dollce commission will be romnveil hv an order of court. As to the legal status of the matter, we are natinfled that the contentions of tne republicans are correct and will be sus tained by the courts. The public de mand a change and It proposes to have It. If the democrats in control of the city government and who have the authority and power to declare the offices of the police commission vacant, refuse to accede to these demands, then their time on the political map will be brief. Our Jack Is Home Today. J. C. Mayo, general freight and pas senger agent of the A. A C. railroad returned from a business trip to Tilla mook yesterday. Mr. Mayo was Inter viewed by an Astorlan representative yesterday, and stated that the climate of Tillamook was the finest and most prolific of any county on the coast. The people are complaining of the OPPORTUNITY Master of humau destinies am I ; Fame, Love and Fortune on my foot steps wait ; Cities and fields I walk; I penetrate Deserts and seas remote, and pass ing by Hovel and mart and palace, soon or late I knock unbidden once at every gate. If sleeping, wake; feasting rise be fore I turn away. It is tbe hour of Fate, And they who follow me reach every state Mortals desire, and conquer every foe Save death; but those yho doubt or hesitate, Condemned to failure, penury and woe, Seek me iu vain, and uselessly im plore ; I answer not, and I return no more.
