UOi by O. L Kilmer. GENERAL THOMAS said that th battle ot Franklin saved Naahvlll and that th battle of Franklin Itself was saved by Opdycke'a brigade of Stanley' Fourth eorpa. Using th same course of reasoning, General Stanley saved th battle of Franklin by hla activity and flnnn during th preceding twenty-four hours. Th Federal force engaged at Frank lin, th Fourth and Twenty-third corps, belonged to th army of General Thom as, who wss at Naahvlll. Th two corps were acting as on body, and General Bchofleld, commander of the Twenty-third corps, waa In command. Thomas bad ordered Schofleld to march In retrograde befor Hood's ar my of Confederate from th banka of th Duck river along the Columbia pike, through Franklin and across th Harpeth river at that point, with all possible haate toward Naahvlll. But Hood nearly spoiled the game the even ing before Franklin waa fought by throwing Forrest s cavalry and th ad vance of two corps of Infantry around Schofleld'a column on each flank and Intercepting tb retreat at Spring Hill, several houra march south of Frank tin. Stanley and his corps hsd th lead of Bchofleld's column snd drove Forrest away from Spring Hill, bluffed Hoods corpa and division commanders and kept the Confederates at arm'a length while Schofleld'a wagon trains and ar tlllery and Infantry of the Twenty third corpa marched through under cover of the darkness on the retreat to ward Franklin. At daylight on the 80th Hood again pushed forward, and Stanley's troops, bringing up tb rear, kept the Confederates In check all th way to Franklin. Bchofleld had no intention of mak ing a stand at Franklin, but In order to cover the crossing of Harpeth river stationed hla own Twenty-third corps upon line around the village from bank to bank on th south side. He did not expect attack on the south bank, but thought that Hood would at tempt to pass around the flanks as bs had done before and cut the army off completely from Nashville. He took all th artillery of th Twenty-third corps with blm to th north bank and a portion of tb Fourth corps artillery. On of th three divisions of Stan ley's corps, Wood's, wss ordered by Bchofleld to cross to the north bank. Stanley, who waa III, accompanied Wood's corps. Tb pik along which ths army had inarched from Spring Hill bisected ths Twenty-third corps line of defense on the south bank, and where It passed through s gap waa left for the move ment of wagon and troops. Atthatpoint much of the Fourth corpa artillery waa massed. Warmer's division of Stan ley's corps brought up the rear and took position two miles In front of Franklin. About 2:30 p. m., finding bis flank turned by heavy columns of the enemy, Wagner decided to with draw his command to a position about a third of a mile In front of the Twen ty-third corps center that la. where the pike passed through the fortified line. Opdycke'a brigade panned Inside the works a reserve to the Twenty- third corps line on the pike, 200 or 300 ysrds In rear. The Interest of the battle turns upon the action of Opdycke'a brigade and of Conrad's and Lane's at the extreme front The Confederate attack, when It came about 4 o'clock in tb after noon, was very sudden, and Wagner ordered Conrad and Lane to fight This they did stubbornly, checking the ad vance of the Confederates. When at laat, being overwhelmed in front their right and left flanks turned, they did retreat they were followed with a rush by the Confederates, who felt sure thst Schofleld'a army waa In a trap and that they would drive It Into the river. The soldiers of Conrad and Lane reached the worka with broken ranks. Nevertheless they had suf ficient self control to rally and take part In the recovery of the line. This counterstroke wss Initiated by Op dycke and his brigade, Stanley having been anticipated by Juat so much time as it took for him to ride from the north bank of tb river to the seen of danger. There was no more brilliant episode In the whole war than the ride of Stan ley from th north bank of th river to th seen of fighting on the south bank. He waa distant from Wagner's exposed brigade when they began to fire upon the advancing Confederates about one mile. Leaping Into his sad dle, be galloped across the bridge, through the ranks of the stragglers, bis face set In the direction of the bat tle. It was then 4 o'clock, and for more than four hours the officers and soldiers had been aware that the whole army was to cross to the north bank of the river at dark. Retreat and not battle waa In the air. But the ball was open, and the well known figure of Stanley was seen rushlug to the front Without waiting for orders Opdycke hsd set bis brigade In motion to recover the guns and para pets abandoned to the Confederates, Spurring bis horse forward and strik ing and shooting right snd left he sef tb example for hla officers and sol diers. Two regiments were st his heels deployed; two were In the second line and three were In the rear line. J. U Juat aa the column waa under way Stanley came up npou tta left flank. Seeing that Opdycke, riding at th head of th center of hla brigade, waa charging to recover tb loat works, h gave htm no order, but rode forward with the third Hue. Tb melee that en sued between theae seven regiments, Joined by the atouteat hearted of Cou rod's and line's soldiers, and th Con federate waa close and deadly, l'rls onera and flairs were gathered In, the guns recovered and turned upon the Coufederatea, and the worka wer re taken and held. Rtnnley'a home waa killed under blm. and he himself, while awtnglng hla hat to cheer on hla mcu, received a most exasperating wound from a bullet which plowed a gash three Inches In length across ths nape of his neck close to tb spin. Ignor ing this painful, not to aay dangerous, hurt, he remained ou the ground until the line waa reorganised, Opdycke'a brigade and the rallied troop of Con rad and l4in In the recaptured worka with the guna In their possession, con fidence restored all along the Hue and victory In alght It uot already com plete. In fact, he did not relinquish ac tive command of the Fourth corps un til the troopa reached their destination at Naahvllle next day. Next to the personal bearing of Stan ley and Opdycke and the conduct of Opdycke'a regiment Interest center upon the action of the troopa under Conrad and I,ane after retiring from the extreme front to the Twenty-third corpa breastworks. Historical narra tive relating detalla of the bat lie, but more especially the official reports, are clear upon thla point In a history of Franklin put forth In 1880 by General J. D. Cox, commander of the Twenty third corpa In that battle, th author ssys: "Our men, who had been driven back from the line, rallied by officers of all grades, returned to their posts. While rallying these men Stanley wss wound ed." General Opdycke lu a narrative print ed In 1881 aald: "General Stanley added hla effort to rally under a very heavy Ore of mua- STASXST M TBI THiCX Of THS HOUT. ketry the scattered troops to the sup port of the men at the regained work? General Tbomaa' official report of the battle ears that Stanley waa "severely wounded while engaged In rallying a portion of hla command," and Kcho field's state that th wounding took place while Stanley "was gallantly urging forward hla troop to regain the lost works." GEORGE L. KILMER. RU Fertrfclt. l A tramp of some llttl respectability appeared at a gentleman's door asking alms. "Not today," said th Interrogat ed on. "When may I calir respond ed th tramp. "Why don't call at all. I know what you art. I aaw your clo ture on a tin can at th grocery stors at the corner." Th applicant for a loan sauntered leisurely down to the place and stood viewing the goods In the widow. Soon his eye came upon a can of crustaceans from the Maine coast. Then the Joke flashed on him. As he meandered away be mumbled to himself, "Well, that's the neatest way of calling a fellow a lobster that I've struck yetr She Gave film ta nrm.
