"Shore Acres. " There must be great merit and ster ling worth in a play to carry it suc cessfully through ten or more consecu- as an epoch-marking work and Its au thor was spoken of as the American apostle of realism and the American Ibsen. Heme, and flrsfc produced by him at McVicker's theater, Chicago, In Hay, 1892, and it still continues to bask in the sunshine of public favor. In its caree it has broken many records for long runs, the! longest being a season's run at Daly's theater. New York. With the exception of a few of the faithful, who were charged with the duty of electing a new police com mission for the city of Astoria, no one knew that such a movement had been formulated, or that' any efforts were to be made to oust the present controls slon. Several prominent polltldiuis were Interviewed on the subject yester day and there seems to be a variance In the opinions expressed. Republic ans claim that the fact that W. H. Bar ker has moved from the city and no longer has a legal residence here, that his position Is vacant That W. J. Cook while claiming to be a resident of the city for political purposes, has disposed of all hit Interests here, and has not been a resident for over Ave years. He has been In the city but a little less than three months during the past five years, and has attended but two meetings of the commission. It is further contended that 8. S. Gor don was elected to fill the unexpired term of John Kopp, and that, accord ing to the charter, his term expires on January 1. Section 137 of the charter provides as follows: "Sec 137, The police commissioners shall be residents, voters and tax pay era of the city of Astoria, and all va canclea occur! ng In the board shall be filled by appointment made by the mayor of the city of Astoria,, with the consent of a majority of the common council." City Attorney 8mlth was seen by an Astorian representative, and stated that In his opinion, there was no va cancy In the office of any of the po lice commissioners, and that If a va cancy did exist, by the removal, death or resignation of the Incumbent, the vbphikv mil. Mlln. K .. ..... by the mayor, subject to confirmation I by the common council. The demo aro oi uic opinion, mat me re publicans stole a march on them, and to offset this, the officers of Cook, and Barker, and possibly Gorden 'will be declared vacant at the meeting of the common council next Monday night and the mayor will appoint three po lice commissioners. This, It Is claimed, will snag the republicans, and commission will be appointed that That don't reward its workers can not prosper. If you would have Astoria grow don't forget your hustlers. HI email Wise Astoria's Live Clothier will make no change in the present personnel of the police force. The first intimation a large majority of the people of Astoria had on the re publican ruse, was when they read the Astorian yesterday morning, and opinion seems to be divided as to the expediency and legality of the proceed ings.
