THE NEGRO DIALECT. toai ftmnti on laat Laereaee Daaaars Kfarta ! Sa.tala It. "As a rule the negro who hat grown out of the dialect of hi race make an extremely poor showing In an effort to niluile the negro' talk," said an ob servant man, "ami his effort to writ It are even more pronounced failure. Hut Paul Laurence Puubar, the negro poet, has wrltteu at least one thing In which he auatnlued the dialect of his race. In the 'lHath Song Dunbar got closer to the talk and the nature of the negro than In any other effort It la worth recalling, o here It Is: "Lay me down beneat de wilier In d trass. Whh d branch 'II go a-slngln' a It pas An w en I s a-layln low I kin h)Hh it ss It to Stnsln', 'Sleep, my honey, tek yo' ree' at U7 "Lay me nigh to whan hit mek a little pool. An' d watah stan's to quiet Ink an' cool, Whan d little blrO In spring TJst to come an' drink an' ting, La' the chlllen waded on dey way ft school. "Let me settle w'n my houldah drapt dey toad Nigh enouch to hyeah de aotte In d road, Fu' I fink de las long res' Owtne to Moth my aperrit bet' St Is layla 'aiong de thin fa allui knowed, "You will observe her that be show the negro's strong devotion to the V and It la Interesting became of th tendency on the part of writers of ne gro dialect to force the T out by th substitution of .' Dunbar's use of Ts' for the Improper 'I Is' is genuine. Moat negro dialect writers of today would write It 'Ah',' for they nearly ilwayi use 'Ah for 'I.' So be show the same preference for 1' In the lines "An' w'en I's a-layln' low I kin hyeah it as It go Stnsln', 'Sleep, my honey, tek yo' ret' at las'.' "Here we have 'IV and 'I kin,' both showing the negro's devotion to the sound of 1' So be use 'gwlne' for 'go ing,' probably errs In the distinctive 'gwln to,' for the negro, sa a rule, will make one word out of the phrase, glv lug It more the sound of 'gwlnter.' But, on the whole, the dialect Is good and Is well sustained." New Orleans Times-Democrat Every Woman i m iMMNUd MM BnOOW ADoat uw wonoemu marvel whirling. $pry now fal 1rf. "How I loath and despise poverty! I actually believe I abed the odor of gasoline Just a Madge Carr doea th odor of violets!" "Economy! Economy I Ecouomyt" she continued, punctuating ber word vtth a pull at th finger of the glov which ah was now fastening upon a 11m where several other dangled in pathetic blpleane. "llow I hat th word I" Talking to oneself ha always th advantage of affording relief to pent up feeling without uconntertng op position. Bo It may bar been a much oo account of th explosive qual ity of her thoughts a of th fluid h was using that Louis bad selected th tar end of th back lawn for ber operation that morning. , Th fenc was high and almoat con cealed by a network of spring green try. For a moment th girl forgot beraoif, lost la admiration of th scene bout her th great old treat under which three generation of Ralnor had played and the velvety award up on which a robin waa hopping about In a businesslike search for food. Then h sighed again, two omtnoua line appearing on her smooth fore bead. A ilk waist waa plunged Into Its gasoline bath with an energy born of rebellion at thing they were. "If I had a son," she bunt out, car ried far beyond the proper scop of maidenly meditation by th strength of ber feeling. "I'd tech him from hit youth up that money was the greatest thing In th world." Bh pa need in her work and glanced defiantly about Bh ched to hart somebody bear th shocking sentiment ah waa voicing, but th only living thing In algbt was tb robin, and he was Intent upon hi own affair. "I would r be affirmed, if hr re mark had met with protest "If all SHI CALLED SOVTLT, 'VaCXT very well to talk about honor and no bility and aU that, but the only thing that the world pays any attention to Is money. Look at the Ralnor I They've been honorable men and true for genera Hon, and the result Is that mamma and I haven't money enough to get the roof mended and that th last of th nam baa to clean her gloves and gowns herself or wear them tolled I "There" that Seymour girl, Just as ordinary at b can be! But nobody carta how 'nouvean' tht money It, to long at It la thert. I wouldn't bar thought, though, that Jack"- Hr noatrll quivered tnd tht dab bed away at the waist In ber hands rathcrly blindly. During th period of silence that followed, th collar of, light silk waist was subjected to long and exhaustive friction. On would almoat bav thought that ah bad forgotten where th was and what aba waa doing from tht automatic way In which tht worked and tht nnteelng expression of her eyes. ,u 1 dent car ra tht least" ber role was really beautifully cool and In' different "but If painful to e peo plt toady to to money people at least that you care that Is, that you've known a long time. "She' the very type of a girl that I've beard blm laugh at t hundred timet, but Just the same he danced with ber three times st the Wllloagh bys', was out riding with her yester day and is probably decorating that gandy veranda of theirs at this mo ment" A careful examination of the waist as sbe pinned it on the line beside the gloves absorbed her for the next few minutes. Whatever a Ralnor did had of necessity to be well done, and no professional cleaner could have eyed bis work more critically and minutely than she did hers. "I suppose the glitter of the millions tbe will have dazzles blm!" sbe ob served scornfully. "Money makes any on fascinating. Too much nonsense has been written about love. Some body ought to write a great big, stir ring epic about money. Properly done, tt would mak tbe 'Nlebelungen Ring read Ilk a nnreery tnl! "I'd do th nam thlui tuyaolf, rut going to, In fact. Old Mr. Mimham' heart and money are mini for the taking, and I'll writ uuu thli very morning. What glorlou times mamma and I will have when I'm ml trees of that fortune ouly I wish tht poor old man would "It doesn't make any difference, 1 nate poverty, ana 111 never marry a poor man. "Oh. bar ente enough to that I'm not wanted here," he continued without walling fur u reply. "I lame to tell you something, but It scarcely seem worth while. I wa answered befor I bad a chanc to aak." U Jumped up and started off across the iswn with great stride. Tb girl watcbed him with wicked, exultant de-1 light. Suddenly a awtft change came over ber fee, and eh called aoftly, "Jack!" H turned and resarded her oncer, talnly. while ahe looked hurt and amated. Then be alowly retraced hi stops. "I fancied you had something to tell me," she observed Innocently, "It wouldn't be worth while. You tee, I am a poor man." She claaped her band behind ber and looked blm over speculatively, theu ha shook ber bead. "No, i don't oil you a poor man. You're big and strong sod rather nice Besides, you have tbe kind of blu eye that I like ' She stopped for a moment, tnd then she finished softly: "Old Mr. Maaham Is my Idea of poor man."
