rean soil are evidenced, according to a
Herald dispatch from Seoul (by way
of Shanghai) by a report from the gov
ernor of Ouelpart island, off the south
western coast of Corea, asking Instruc
tions and stating that a steamship load
f Japanese workmen with tools and
machinery were landed and immedi
ately begin the construction of fortifi
cations. The Corean foreign office an
nounced that Quelpart is closed to
alien residence according to treaty
stipulations and has requested the
Japanese government to withdraw its
people. General Hasegawa has sent
an official dispatch to the Corean em
peror alleging the existence here of a
pro-Russian party among the officials
Interested therein.
Will Have Philippine Exhibit.
Portland, Nov. 29. It has been de
cided by the government board of the
Lewis and Clark centennial that the
Philippine Islands will be represented
at the exposition by a comprehensive
exhibit
Besides a complete display of Philip
pine products a "live" exhibit will be
made of the different tribes of the Is-
lands. The latter will be In the form
of native villages and will exemplify
the maimers and customs of the peo
ple. The villages will Include, about
SOO natives.

laborer, aged S7, was run Into by a
shunted box car In the Northern Pa
cific yards at 1 o'clock this morning,
receiving fatal Injuries. He was
slightly Intoxicated and did not see the
car approaching. Ills body was horri
bly mangled. A brother lives in
Sshnectady, N. Y.
