Some time ago the young man paid
the simple country girl some attention.
He left last spring for San Francisco
to take a business college education.
During his absence he did not write.
Mary thought him still her lover and
waited for his home coming. About
two weeks ago be returned and when
she found he no longer cared for her
left her horn after Swansea's return.

been sentenced by a military court to
three months confinement says a
Times dispatch from Berlin. His
trial grew out of a duel with an archi
tect in which both were wounded. The
latter will be tried before a civil
court.

New Tork, Nov. 25. Guy Roihe. the
Rambler who waa "hot last evening In
Broadway, near Thirty Fifth street,
while the sidewalks were crowded with
persona leaving the theatera after the
matinees, waa atlU alive at an early
hour this morning. It waa aald at the
New Tork hospital that he might live
sometime, but there la small chance of
hla recovery.
The arrest of Stewart A. Felton,
known also by several other names,
charged with the shooting, was one of
the quickest cases of the kind man
aged by the police In sometime. One
of the pursuers waa a stenographer,
J. a King. He went to the station
and. at the request of the police, took
on the spot the testimony of all the
witnesses. King declared that he saw
Felton nre at Roche, and George P.
Auld, a paymaster In the army. con-
Armed his words, saying he stood close
beside Felton at the time.
Half a doien men were also ex
amined and Felton. who gave his
birthplace as Ohio, waa searched. In
one pocket waa a roll of $2900 In bills
of large denomination. The prisoner
showed absolutely no concern over his
arrest.
After the hearing had been com
pleted. Police Captain Cottrell de
clared Felton to be one of the worst
men he ever had to deal with In the
precinct and that Roche waa equally
bad.
"As a gambler," said the captain.
"Felton haa given me more trouble
than any other man In New Tork.
For a long time I have had men sta
tioned in front of hla place In 16th
street and also at the rear entrance
and have tried my best to drive him
out of the city."
Other policemen declared Felton
was driven out of Chicago several
years ago and was known all through
the west. At one time he ran a gamb
ling house, It waa charged. Just back
of the station house. This place hud
a movable bridge by which patrons
could enter, after which It would be
let down. In case of raid they could
escape In the same manner. Twice
within the last three months he has
been a prisoner, each time for assault
ing a woman, once with a cane.

To be Held in Salem Next Month List
of Speakers.
Salem, Nov. 25. President John H.
Scott, of the Oregon Good Roads asso
ciation, is sending out letters to all
members In regard to the coming an
nual convention to be held In this city
in December. Judge Scott says that
the convention this year will be far
superior to anything of the kind ever
held In the state before. From 150 to
2oo delegates are expected from this
county alone and as many or narly so
will be In attendance from the sur
rounding counties, and every county
In the state wilt be fully represented,
while a large number of delegates
from Washington will also ' come.
President Scott says:
"I desire to call your attention to
the fact that the second annual con
vention will be held at Salem, on the
13, 14 and 15th of December. We are
endeavoring to make this meeting of
special Interest; among those expected
to deliver adresses are:
Governor Chamberlain.
Samuel Hill, president Washington
Good Roads assoslation.
James P. Melkle, secretary Wash
ington Good Roads association.
P. L. Campbell, president University
of Oregon.

talk of a general strike or workmen,
according to a Herald dispatch from
lluenoa Ayres. The employes of the
largest electrical concerns In lluenoa
Ayres have quit work. The govern
ment placed at the dlsoal of the
company electricians of the navy for
regular work that is necessary for all
residents.
There have been several collisions be
tween the striking cab drivers and
the police. The situation In Roaario,
the second city of Argentina, la aer-
lout. There was a collision there
Wednesday In which two persons
were killed and several wounded.
