Thomas, Lawyer, Incurred Enmity of Law Breakers Who Undertake Vengeance by Da atroying Horn. Omaha, Neb, Nov. St The home of Elmer E. Thomas, a prominent lawyer ot this city and attorney for the civic federation, was badly wrecked by a bomb placed on the front porch at i o'clock this morning:. Mr. Thomas and his family were In the house at the time and he considers It miraculous that none of them were Injured. Mrs. Thomas was awakened about i o'clock by a noise on the front porch and aroused her husband, believing that burglars were trying to enter the house. Mr. Thomas began an Investi gation and discovered a lire on the front porch. He picked up a large rug and attempted to smother'the flumes when a terrific explosion occurred. Although but a few feet from the mis sile he escaped Injury. The front wall of the house was blown In. doors were shattered and an Immense hole torn In the ground. The interior of the building Is a wreck. A squad of police were on the scene in a short time but no clue to the per petrators of the deed could be found. The man evidently made a hasty re treat after setting the fuse which ex ploded the bomb. Mr. Thomas saw no one leaving the premises. The explo sion was heard for three miles. Attorney. Thomas has been active for sometime in the prosecution of saloon keepers charged with a violation of the Slocum law which provides for mid night and Sunday closing of saloons. He also has been acting for the civic federation In the habeas corpus pro ceeding by which Thomas Denntson has sought to avoid being taken to Iowa In connection with the $75,009 Polluck diamond robbery. To these circumstances, Mr. Thomas said to the Associated Press he attributed thin J attack on his home. THINK THEY HAVE HIM Mysterious "Automobile" Murder May Soon be Explained. Chicago, Nov. 22. Evidence has been unearthed by the police indicating that "Mr. Dove," the mysterious passenger who engaged the automobile In which ChaufTeur William Bate was dead with two bullet wounds found in his head at Lemont Friday night was In hiding In a Joliet boarding house as late as sundown Sunday night, 42 hours after the crime was committed. The clew which sends the detective off on the first tangible scent picked up since the finding of the body was dis covered at Rome, a village a few miles out of Joliet. Mayor Crollns of Joliet early today sent word to the Chicago detectives at Lemont that the suspect was under surveillance and would be arrested within 24 hours. Frederick Doehly, a saloonkeeper at Romeo, told the detectives that early Saturday morning a stranger walked Into his barroom. He carried a shabby canvas suit case to which was strapped with the lining outward, a light over coat The man walked nervously about in the tavern for three hours, when he walked out and boarded a car going in the direction of Joliet. On the car rode Miss Farrell, the vil- laee school mistress, who noted her fellow traveler minutely. Her atten tlon was attracted by his extreme ner vousness. Both Doehly and Miss Far rell, when questioned by the detectives described the man In detail. In every point they pictured "Mr. Dove." A supplementary tracer was picked up late last night at a boarding house In Joliet kept by H. Hauser. Hauser In formed the police that at breakfast time Sunday morning a strange man had taken lodging at the house. He seemed on the verge of nervous col lapse. When darkness had fallen the pro prietor saw his guest sneak cov ertly down the backstairs with a can vas suit case In his hand and an over' mat over his arm. He left by the kitchen door and walked In the direc tlon of the Rock Island station. A train left for the west shortly after ward.
